India's Automobile Retail Sales Achieve Historic High in February 2026
In a landmark development for the automotive sector, retail sales of automobiles in India soared by nearly 26% to reach 19.1 lakh units in February 2026, setting an all-time record for the month. This significant growth was revealed in data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), highlighting a robust recovery and sustained consumer demand across the country.
Unprecedented Growth Across Vehicle Segments
The data indicates that five out of the six major vehicle segments experienced their highest-ever February sales. This includes two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, and tractors. The only segment that witnessed a slight decline was construction equipment, which saw a marginal drop of 1.2%.
FADA President CS Vigneshwar described February as a "landmark month" for the industry. He attributed the strong performance to policy-led confidence in the market, particularly following the implementation of GST 2.0. "The sustained demand across multiple vehicle segments is a clear indicator that the policy reforms are now translating into tangible growth," Vigneshwar stated.
Segment-Wise Performance Highlights
The two-wheeler segment remained the largest contributor, with retail sales reaching approximately 17 lakh units in February, marking a 25% increase from 13.6 lakh units in the previous year. Growth was observed in both urban and rural markets, underscoring widespread demand.
Passenger vehicle sales also achieved a record high, with dealers reporting around 4 lakh units sold during the month, up 26% from 3.1 lakh units last year. Notably, rural markets exhibited a growth rate of over 34%, compared to about 21% in urban areas. SUVs emerged as a key driver of demand across all markets, leading to a reduction in dealer inventory levels to approximately 27 to 29 days.
Commercial vehicle sales rose by 29% to one lakh units in February, supported by increased infrastructure activity and growth in logistics and e-commerce sectors. Tractors recorded the fastest growth among all categories, with sales surging 36% to 89,418 units from 65,579 units, pointing to healthy rural demand and improved agricultural outcomes.
Positive Outlook for the Near Future
FADA further reported that dealers remain optimistic about the near-term outlook. Most dealers anticipate continued sales growth in March, driven by multiple festivals, financial year-end vehicle purchases, improved rural income following favorable crop results, and enhanced affordability due to recent GST revisions.
This record-breaking performance in February 2026 reflects a resilient automotive market in India, buoyed by policy support and evolving consumer preferences. The data underscores a positive trajectory for the industry, with expectations of sustained momentum in the coming months.
