Jamshedpur Business Community Intensifies Push for New Airport
Prominent businessmen from the industrial city of Jamshedpur have formally escalated their demand for a new airport by dispatching letters to Union Aviation Minister K Ram Mohan Naidu and Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren. This concerted effort underscores the growing frustration over the city's exclusion from India's aviation network, which stakeholders argue is severely hampering economic progress.
Economic Stagnation Due to Lack of Air Connectivity
Manav Kedia, President of the Singhbhum Chamber of Commerce and Industries (SCCI), articulated the core issue in his correspondence. He emphasized that the absence of direct air links is adversely affecting business expansion in local industrial hubs. "Jamshedpur stands as the industrial capital of Jharkhand, yet the lack of aviation infrastructure forces citizens, industrialists, traders, government officials, and students to undertake arduous journeys to Ranchi or Kolkata for air travel," Kedia stated on Tuesday. This logistical hurdle, he noted, results in significant inconvenience and operational inefficiencies.
Stalled Project and Proposed Interim Solutions
The demand for an airport is not new. In 2019, the foundation stone for the Dhalbhumgarh airport was laid by then-Chief Minister Raghubar Das and then-Union Aviation Minister Jayant Sinha. However, the project has been mired in delays for over six years, primarily due to unresolved forest and environmental clearances. Kedia urged both central and state governments to collaborate urgently to resolve these bottlenecks, calling the project "long-pending and critically important."
As an interim measure, the SCCI has proposed leveraging the existing Jamshedpur airport with assistance from the Tata group. A letter has been sent to Tata Steel's Global CEO and MD, T V Narendran, suggesting that modifications to the current facility could enable plane services connecting Jamshedpur to major cities. This stopgap solution aims to provide immediate relief while permanent infrastructure is developed.
Broader Social and Political Support
The push for better air connectivity resonates beyond the business community. Upcoming model Titiksha Pal highlighted a generational concern, noting, "A substantial segment of Gen Z is reluctant to return to Jamshedpur because the city lacks air links to other urban centers where they study or work." This sentiment reflects broader demographic shifts impacting local talent retention.
Politically, Jamshedpur MP Bidyut Baran Mahato has been actively advocating for the cause. "Over the past six years, I have repeatedly engaged with aviation ministers to underscore the urgent need for air connectivity in this century-old city," Mahato told TOI. Adding to the momentum, Union Minister for Tribal Affairs Jual Oram assured support, stating on Saturday, "I will endeavor to present a clear picture to the Union Aviation Minister and Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the challenges faced by residents of this industrial hub due to the airport deficit."
The collective appeal from business leaders, youth, and political figures underscores a unified call for infrastructure development to revitalize Jamshedpur's economic landscape and integrate it more fully into national networks.
