Kerala Chief Minister Unveils Ambitious Multimodal Cargo Network with Kochi Airport as Central Hub
In a significant development for Kerala's logistics and economic infrastructure, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced on Sunday that a comprehensive multimodal cargo network will be established, integrating air, road, rail, and water routes. The announcement was made during the inauguration of the plenary session of the International Cargo Business Summit, organized by Cochin International Airport Limited (Cial) in association with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). This event marked the 25th anniversary of Cial's cargo department, underscoring its pivotal role in the region's trade and commerce.
Kochi Airport to Serve as Primary Hub for Integrated Logistics
Chief Minister Vijayan emphasized that Kochi airport will serve as the primary hub for this multimodal network, positioning it as a key node in India's cargo and logistics landscape. He inaugurated the summit by symbolically moving a gear lever on a cockpit model installed on the stage, highlighting the forward momentum in Kerala's economic strategies. Vijayan stated that Cial is not merely functioning as an airport but is actively striving to create a business environment conducive to Kerala's overall economic growth, leveraging its strategic location and infrastructure.
Cial's Impressive Cargo Performance and Future Projections
During his address, Vijayan provided detailed insights into Cial's operational achievements. He noted that in the last financial year, Cial handled over 65,000 metric tonnes of cargo, a figure that is expected to rise to approximately 74,000 tonnes in the current fiscal year. This growth trajectory reflects the increasing demand for cargo services in the region and Cial's capacity to meet these needs efficiently. The chief minister also highlighted that Cial has provided a 50% dividend to its investors, showcasing its financial robustness and standing as a model for airport operations across the country.
Infrastructure and Certification Initiatives Underway
Further elaborating on Cial's initiatives, Vijayan mentioned that the construction of three bridges benefiting four panchayats is currently in progress, which will enhance connectivity and support the multimodal network. Additionally, Cial has begun the process of obtaining certification for handling pharmaceutical products, a move that is expected to commence immediately upon approval. This certification will expand Cial's capabilities and attract more specialized cargo, particularly in the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors, boosting Kerala's export potential.
Government and Industry Leaders Emphasize Growth Opportunities
In his presidential address, Industries Minister P Rajeeve underscored the importance of global companies establishing logistics parks near the airport. He pointed out that the presence of large-scale companies in the vicinity would allow for greater utilization of Cial's cargo potential, driving economic growth and creating employment opportunities. Rajeeve added that this trend reflects the accelerating growth rate of cargo movement in the region, signaling a positive outlook for Kerala's logistics sector.
Recognition and Participation at the Summit
The ceremony also included a segment where Chief Minister Vijayan honoured institutions that demonstrated excellence in cargo exports, recognizing their contributions to Kerala's trade ecosystem. The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Anwar Sadath, MLA; Roji M John, MLA; Angamaly municipality chairperson Rita Paul; Nedumbassery panchayat president Jessy George; Cial director Varghese Jacob; and airport director G Manu. Cial Managing Director S Suhas delivered the welcome speech, while Cargo Department Head Satheesh Kumar R Pai gave the vote of thanks, ensuring the summit concluded on a note of collaboration and future-oriented dialogue.
This announcement marks a strategic step towards enhancing Kerala's position as a logistics hub in India, with the multimodal cargo network expected to streamline trade routes, reduce costs, and foster economic development in the state and beyond.
