Kolkata Metro Enhances Fleet with Energy-Efficient BHEL Rake and 10th Dalian Trainset
Kolkata Metro Upgrades with BHEL Rake, Launches Dalian Trainset

In a significant stride toward modernizing its operations, Kolkata Metro has achieved a dual milestone by recommissioning an advanced BHEL rake and introducing a new Dalian trainset into commercial service. This development marks a pivotal moment for India's oldest metro network, enhancing both efficiency and passenger amenities.

Historic Recommissioning of BHEL Rake with Indigenous Technology

On Friday, January 30, 2026, Kolkata Metro flagged off the BHEL rake, designated as MR-301, from the Noapara Carshed. This air-conditioned rake has been upgraded with an IGBT-based DC-DC chopper propulsion system, a technology developed entirely indigenously in alignment with the 'Make in India' initiative. Previously, this rake lacked regeneration capabilities and was incompatible with the CBTC (Communications-Based Train Control) signalling system, limiting its operational flexibility.

With the new propulsion system, the BHEL rake now seamlessly integrates with CBTC signals, enabling smoother and more reliable service. Kolkata Metro officials have hailed this as a historic achievement, emphasizing that the indigenous development reduces dependency on failure-prone components and aligns with national policies aimed at self-reliance in critical infrastructure.

Substantial Economic and Environmental Benefits

The upgraded propulsion system is not only technologically advanced but also highly energy-efficient. According to Kolkata Metro, each rake fitted with this system is projected to save approximately Rs 35.62 lakh annually on energy costs. Additionally, it will reduce the carbon footprint by an impressive 365 metric tonnes per rake each year.

Looking ahead, once all remaining BHEL rakes are retrofitted with this improved system, the metro network expects to achieve annual savings of around Rs 4.63 crore on energy bills. The cumulative reduction in carbon emissions is estimated to reach 4,745 metric tonnes annually, contributing significantly to environmental sustainability and urban green initiatives.

Launch of the 10th Dalian Trainset for Enhanced Accessibility

In tandem with the BHEL rake recommissioning, Kolkata Metro also rolled out its 10th Dalian trainset, identified as MR-503, for commercial operations. This new addition to the fleet is designed with user-friendly features, particularly catering to differently-abled individuals and senior citizens. The inclusion of such amenities underscores Kolkata Metro's commitment to inclusive public transportation, ensuring that all passengers can travel comfortably and safely.

The Dalian trainset launch complements the network's ongoing efforts to expand and upgrade its services, providing a more robust and accessible metro system for the bustling city of Kolkata.

Implications for Kolkata's Urban Transport Landscape

These advancements reflect Kolkata Metro's dedication to innovation and sustainability in urban transit. By integrating energy-efficient technologies and enhancing accessibility, the metro network sets a benchmark for other Indian cities. The indigenous development of propulsion systems not only supports the 'Make in India' vision but also positions Kolkata Metro as a leader in adopting cutting-edge solutions for public transport challenges.

As Kolkata continues to grow, such upgrades are crucial for managing congestion, reducing pollution, and improving the overall quality of life for residents. The recommissioned BHEL rake and new Dalian trainset represent key steps in this direction, promising a greener and more efficient future for metro commuters.
