Kolkata Vehicle Registrations Hit Record High in 2025

Kolkata Vehicle Registrations Soar to Historic Peak in 2025, Intensifying Urban Mobility Concerns

The city of Kolkata has witnessed an unprecedented surge in vehicle registrations during the year 2025, setting a new record that underscores a rapid acceleration towards private mobility in the metropolitan area. According to the latest data, the total number of registered vehicles in Kolkata has now climbed to a staggering 23,66,267, marking a significant milestone in the city's transportation landscape.

Record-Breaking Figures Highlight Economic Momentum and Urban Strain

In 2025, Kolkata recorded 1,09,807 new vehicle registrations, surpassing the previous high set in 2024. This remarkable increase reflects positive economic activity and trade growth, but it also brings to the forefront severe urban challenges. Transport expert Bhargav Maitra from IIT Kharagpur emphasized that the rising vehicle numbers are exacerbating congestion, increasing emissions, lengthening travel times, and contributing to a worrying decline in public transport usage.

Regional Transport Offices Show Varied Performance

Data from Kolkata's four regional transport offices (RTOs) reveals a mixed picture of growth in 2025. Three zones experienced robust increases in registrations, while one posted a marginal decline. The surge is primarily attributed to personalized modes of transportation, such as two-wheelers and private cars, driven by post-pandemic travel behavior, suburban expansion, and easier access to vehicle financing.

  • Beltala RTO: As the core RTO, it led in registrations with 44,455 vehicles in 2025, a 16% increase from 38,319 in 2024. Cumulative registrations here have reached 9,83,823 vehicles, showing consistent growth after a slight dip in 2023.
  • Behala RTO: This zone stood out with the highest growth rate, registering 14,962 vehicles in 2025, a robust 17.3% increase from 12,755 in 2024. It has seen a rapid recovery since 2023, with a sharp 36% jump since 2024, bringing total registrations to 3,21,537.
  • Salt Lake RTO: Reporting healthy growth, it registered 27,588 vehicles in 2025, an 8.4% rise from 25,453 in 2024. Total registrations have crossed 5,66,137, continuing a steady upward trajectory since 2023.
  • Kasba RTO: The only zone to register a contraction, with 22,802 vehicles in 2025, a marginal 1.52% decline from 23,154 in 2024. Despite this dip, long-term data indicates gradual expansion, with cumulative registrations at 4,94,740 vehicles, according to a transport department official.

Driving Forces Behind the Surge

Personal vehicles dominate the trend, with officials attributing the overall rise to increasing demand for two-wheelers for daily commuting and compact cars for family use. Factors such as rising income levels, improved road connectivity in peripheral areas, and reduced confidence in overcrowded public transport have accelerated this shift towards private mobility.

Future Outlook and Policy Challenges

With early 2026 figures already showing fresh additions across all RTOs, transport officials anticipate that vehicle registrations in Kolkata will remain on a growth path. However, this trend poses significant challenges for policymakers, who must grapple with issues related to congestion, parking, and urban emissions. The ongoing surge highlights the urgent need for balanced urban planning to address both economic benefits and environmental concerns in one of India's major cities.
