From Pharmacy Assistant to Agricultural Pioneer: A Farmer's Journey to Oxford
Ravindra Metkar, a 57-year-old farmer from Masla village in Maharashtra's Amravati district, once earned a meager Rs 150 per month working in a pharmacy back in 1984 as a teenager. Today, he is preparing to travel to the United Kingdom next month to speak at an international conference on artificial intelligence at the prestigious Oxford University. His mission is to share the inspiring story of how he transformed a single acre of land into a Rs 15-crore agricultural enterprise, driven by a simple yet powerful resolve: to avoid paying for fertilisers by making them himself.
Invitation to Global AI Conference on Sustainable Practices
Metkar has received a formal invitation to address the Global Research Conference, themed "AI For Every Mind," scheduled from May 1 to 5 at Said College, Oxford. He will speak on key topics including sustainable farming, cost optimisation, climate-resilient agricultural practices, and poultry entrepreneurship. This opportunity highlights the growing intersection of traditional farming with modern technological advancements, as AI continues to reshape industries worldwide.
Humble Beginnings and Early Struggles
"My father was a Grade 4 state government employee. Life was tough," Metkar recalled, reflecting on his challenging early years. After completing his master's degree in commerce at Amravati University, his first significant break came in 1994 when relatives gifted his family four acres of land. They sold this land and purchased an acre in Bhandara district, marking the beginning of his agricultural journey.
"I realised early on that a farmer cannot control market prices, but can reduce input costs and improve yield. That's when I started making my own fertilisers," he explained. This insight became the cornerstone of his farming philosophy, leading him to develop a self-sustaining model that minimises external dependencies.
Building a Multi-Crore Agricultural Empire
Metkar has successfully turned his principle of self-reliance into a thriving business model. Today, he farms nearly 50 acres in his native village, cultivating a diverse range of crops including mangoes, mosambi, amla, bananas, betel nut, and various grains. Additionally, he operates a poultry farm where locally produced feed has completely replaced commercial products, and farm waste is efficiently recycled back into the system as organic fertiliser.
Inspiring Farmers Nationwide
"I have guided over 50 lakh farmers across the country and shared my techniques with them," Metkar stated proudly. "They feel inspired by my agricultural enterprise. If I can achieve a turnover of Rs 15 crore, so can they." His story serves as a powerful testament to the potential of innovative farming practices combined with entrepreneurial spirit, offering hope and practical guidance to millions in the agricultural sector.
