Maharashtra Emerges as India's Rare Earth Hub with 41% of National Resources
In a significant development for India's strategic mineral sector, the Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) has compiled data revealing that Maharashtra possesses the highest resources of rare earth elements (REEs) in the country. These critical minerals, comprising 17 specialty metals, have gained global attention due to their pivotal role in defense manufacturing and advanced technologies.
National and State-Wide Distribution of Rare Earth Resources
According to the IBM report, India's total estimated REE resources stand at over 29 lakh tons. Maharashtra dominates this landscape with more than 12 lakh tons, accounting for approximately 41% of the nation's total. This positions the state as a key player in India's efforts to secure its supply chain for these essential materials.
Gujarat follows as the second-largest holder, with resources estimated at 11 lakh tons. The data indicates that REE resources are distributed across 11 states, including regions in the north-east. Interestingly, Jharkhand, known for its mineral wealth, reports the lowest finds of rare earth elements, highlighting the specialized nature of these deposits.
Exploration Initiatives in Vidarbha and Beyond
In the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, proactive steps are being taken to tap into these resources. The public sector mining company, Western Coalfields Limited (WCL), is currently exploring REEs in the overburden—earth excavated during coal mining operations. This innovative approach aims to extract value from waste materials, potentially enhancing resource efficiency.
Additionally, Coal India Limited has secured an exclusive block near Ramtek specifically for rare earth exploration. These initiatives underscore the growing focus on leveraging existing mining infrastructure to uncover and utilize REEs, which are vital for sectors ranging from electronics to renewable energy.
Global Context and Strategic Importance
The sudden global emphasis on rare earth elements stems from their extensive applications in defense systems, including missile guidance and communication technologies. As countries worldwide seek to reduce dependency on imports, India's domestic resources, led by Maharashtra, offer a strategic advantage.
