Mumbai's $1 Billion Leather Industry to Get Innovation Hub in Bandra
A multi-storey leather art design and production centre is proposed to be established in Bandra, Mumbai, with the aim of encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship in the city's thriving leather sector. Background of Leather Industry Initiatives in Maharashtra
The government had previously announced several projects to support the leather industry in the state. In 2024, plans were unveiled for a leather park in Deonar, a leather industry training and tanner centre in Kolhapur, a centre of excellence in each revenue division, and a leather industry training centre in Govandi. However, officials have confirmed that none of these initiatives have taken off yet, highlighting the challenges in implementing such schemes.

Officials emphasized that the leather industry in Mumbai is a substantial economic force, primarily based in Dharavi. It represents a $1-billion informal economy that employs over 2.5 lakh (250,000) people across more than 5,000 small businesses. This sector plays a crucial role in the local economy, providing livelihoods to a large workforce and contributing significantly to the city's industrial output.
