Nagpur Airport Sees Passenger Growth But Capacity Constraints Persist
The Nagpur airport witnessed a modest increase in passenger traffic during the financial year ending March 2026, handling approximately 30 lakh passengers. This figure represents a growth of 1 lakh passengers compared to the preceding fiscal year, which recorded 29 lakh passengers. However, despite this upward trend, the airport's passenger traffic remains significantly below its peak operational capacity.
Traffic Remains 15% Below Peak Capacity
The current passenger volume is about 15% lower than the airport's maximum capacity of 35 lakh passengers per fiscal year. This capacity translates to the ability to manage 4-5 flights per hour efficiently. The limited capacity has been identified as a primary constraint in adding new flights to the airport's schedule, according to sources familiar with the matter.
Expansion Plans Mired in Uncertainty
For passenger traffic to grow substantially, new flights must be introduced, which necessitates the expansion of the terminal building. However, the expansion project has become a complex issue with no clear resolution in sight. The airport is currently managed by Mihan India Limited (MIL), a joint venture between the Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) and the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
MIL had previously devised a plan for a minor expansion of the existing terminal building, proposing to extend it sideways. This expansion was projected to increase the airport's capacity by approximately 5 lakh passengers annually, allowing for 5-6 flights per hour. Nevertheless, due to the limited space available at the current location, a major expansion is not feasible, as confirmed by a source.
GMR Takeover Delays Complicate Matters
The situation is further complicated by the pending takeover of the airport by the GMR Group. The company won the bids to manage the airport one-and-a-half years ago, and a court ruling subsequently facilitated the takeover process. Once in charge, GMR is expected to undertake brownfield expansion, including the construction of a new terminal building located further ahead off Wardha Road.
However, a Cabinet approval for GMR to formally acquire the airport management has been awaited for over a year. Until this approval is granted, the company cannot commence operations. This lack of clarity has hindered decisions even on minor expansion projects, leaving MIL undecided about proceeding with its planned expansion, according to sources.
Future Prospects Hinge on Resolution
The stagnation in expansion efforts poses a significant challenge to enhancing Nagpur airport's connectivity and passenger handling capabilities. The ongoing uncertainty surrounding the GMR takeover and the subsequent expansion plans continues to impact the airport's potential for growth. Stakeholders are closely monitoring developments, hoping for a resolution that will unlock the airport's full capacity and facilitate the addition of new flights to meet rising demand.
