Nagpur's Rs 998 Crore Indora-Dighori Flyover Project Nears Major Milestones
The ambitious Rs 998 crore Indora-Dighori flyover project in Nagpur is poised for significant progress by the end of April, with authorities targeting the opening of at least one major flyover section. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), which is spearheading this critical infrastructure initiative, remains confident about completing the primary flyover works well before the official deadline of June 2026.
Phased Opening Strategy for Key Flyover Sections
In an exclusive discussion with media representatives, a senior NHAI official revealed that the authority plans to inaugurate the Bhande Plot to Dighori flyover by mid-April. This 2.2-kilometer elevated corridor begins where the existing Sakkardara flyover descends at Bhande Plot Square on the bustling Umred Road and extends to Dighori Naka. This section is expected to provide substantial relief to commuters traveling between East Nagpur and the city's central areas by alleviating chronic traffic congestion.
The official further indicated that the Kamal Chowk to Reshimbagh Square flyover could potentially open by April-end, though this timeline depends heavily on the progress of the Railway Over Bridge (ROB) construction at Pachpaoli, which forms an integral part of this flyover segment. "If the ROB work experiences further delays, the opening of the first flyover might be postponed," cautioned the NHAI representative.
Project Complexity and Engineering Marvels
Widely regarded as one of Nagpur's most complex infrastructure undertakings, the Indora-Dighori flyover project traverses multiple densely populated and congested localities. The project encompasses two major flyovers designed to transform urban mobility.
The first flyover spans approximately 4 kilometers, commencing just ahead of Kamal Chowk and passing over crucial traffic junctions including:
- Golibar Square
- Lal Imli Square
- Agrasen Square
- Gandhi Gate
- Ashok Square
A sophisticated five-armed elevated rotary has been constructed at Ashok Square to optimize traffic flow management. This flyover will terminate just beyond Reshimbagh Square, ahead of the existing Sakkardara flyover. As part of this stretch, the old Pachpaoli flyover has been demolished and is being reconstructed, with the exception of the ROB over twin railway crossings which remains under active construction.
The second flyover measures around 2.2 kilometers and represents a vital connection for eastern Nagpur commuters seeking efficient access to the city center.
Ongoing Works and Timeline Considerations
While the main flyover structures approach completion, several ancillary works continue simultaneously. The construction of entry and exit ramps, particularly those in front of Daga Hospital and near Bada Taj Bagh, may require additional time beyond the primary flyover openings.
Furthermore, work on two underpasses near the Pachpaoli railway crossings—critical components of the overall project—is anticipated to miss the original deadline by approximately three to four months. Other elements, including two Road Under Bridges (RuBs) at Pachpaoli and additional supporting infrastructure, might extend beyond the June 2026 target for the main flyover completion.
The NHAI maintains its commitment to delivering this transformative infrastructure project, which promises to significantly enhance Nagpur's transportation network and reduce travel times across the city's busiest corridors.
