Noida International Airport Clears Key Hurdle with DGCA Aerodrome Licence
Noida Airport Gets DGCA Licence, Operations Nearer

Noida International Airport Achieves Crucial Regulatory Milestone with DGCA Licence

The upcoming Noida International Airport in Jewar has successfully obtained its aerodrome licence from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). This development represents a significant regulatory clearance, bringing the ambitious project substantially closer to the commencement of flight operations.

Official Confirmation and Next Steps

Rakesh Kumar Singh, Chief Executive Officer of Noida International Airport Limited (NIAL) and the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority, confirmed the issuance of the licence. According to NIAL’s nodal officer Shailendra Bhatia, the licence has been granted under established civil aviation rules and encompasses permissions for both domestic passenger flights and cargo operations.

Officials have indicated that the remaining operational deployment and final arrangements are anticipated to be completed within approximately 45 days. They have affirmed that the core airport infrastructure is now fully prepared and ready.

"Receiving the aerodrome license is a key milestone in our journey. It reflects the strong collaboration with our partners and the rigorous work undertaken to ensure readiness for commercial operations. We are committed to delivering a modern, efficient and passenger-centric airport that will serve as a catalyst for regional economic growth," stated Christoph Schnellmann, Chief Executive Officer of Noida International Airport (NIA).

There are expectations that the airport will be formally inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, although specific dates have not yet been announced.

Significance of the Aerodrome Licence

The aerodrome licence, issued under Rule 78 of the Aircraft Rules, 1937, serves as an official certification. It verifies that the Noida International Airport complies with all DGCA-mandated regulatory requirements. These standards cover critical areas including:

  • Operational procedures and safety systems
  • Infrastructure integrity and design
  • Navigation aids and air traffic control systems
  • Emergency response preparedness and protocols

This licence follows a recent security clearance granted by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) for domestic passenger operations and for handling both domestic and international cargo.

Authorities emphasize that these approvals collectively mark substantial progress toward the airport's operational readiness. However, a final step remains: commercial flight operations will commence only after the Aerodrome Security Programme (ASP) receives its ultimate approval from BCAS.

"We look forward to receiving this approval in due course, following which airline schedules, ticket sales, and the formal inauguration will be announced closer to the launch of operations," the airport authority clarified in an official statement.

Project Scale, Capacity, and Development Status

The Noida International Airport is a major greenfield project being developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model in Jewar, Gautam Buddh Nagar. Upon full operational capacity, it is projected to rank among the largest airports in India.

Phase One Specifications:

  • Covers approximately 1,300 hectares of land.
  • Features a single runway and one integrated terminal building.
  • Designed to handle an estimated 1.2 crore (12 million) passengers annually.

Passenger services were initially targeted to begin in September 2024, with the project now advancing toward that goal.

Operational Preparations in Full Swing

Comprehensive operational readiness activities are currently underway as part of the airport’s Operational Readiness Activation and Transition (ORAT) programme. This initiative ensures all systems, operational processes, and personnel are thoroughly prepared for a successful launch.

A pivotal validation milestone was achieved in December 2024, when IndiGo conducted a test flight using an Airbus A320 aircraft. This exercise successfully evaluated the airport’s approach procedures, navigation aids, and air traffic control systems.

Airport authorities report that major operational infrastructure is complete. Furthermore, key concessions have been awarded for essential services, including:

  1. Ground handling and aviation fuel supply
  2. Cargo logistics and management
  3. Retail outlets and food & beverage services
  4. In-flight catering and mobility services
  5. The airport hotel facility

The Airports Authority of India has commissioned the communication and navigation systems, a critical step that brings the Noida International Airport to the brink of full operational readiness. The project now awaits the final security nod to welcome its first commercial flights.
