Pollachi's First State-Supported Coir Firm Launched to Boost Exports and Jobs
Pollachi, renowned as the Coconut City, has achieved a significant milestone with the establishment of its first state government-supported coir firm, Integrated Coirs India Private Limited. This initiative is designed to accelerate industrial growth, expand export opportunities, and create substantial employment in the region.
Inauguration and Strategic Role
Chief Minister M K Stalin inaugurated the firm at Nattukalpalayam near Pollachi on Monday via videoconferencing from Chennai. The unit will function as a special purpose vehicle for the coir clusters in Pollachi, providing essential common facilities and warehouse services to streamline operations.
Investment and Objectives
Developed at a cost of Rs9.2 crore under the Micro Cluster Development Programme, the unit focuses on promoting value-added coir products. According to an official source, the state government contributed Rs6.6 crore to this project. The primary goal is to transform coconut fiber from Pollachi's coir units into high-value items such as coir geo-textiles, brush mats, panama mats, and export-quality rope products. Notably, the coir geo-textiles produced will be utilized for soil erosion control, enhancing environmental sustainability.
Membership and Benefits
The firm includes owners of 23 coir manufacturing units and allied products as members, with foundation work commencing in 2022 to strengthen the regional coir sector. Approximately 200 coir units in and around Pollachi are anticipated to benefit from this facility. C Balasubramanian, managing director of Integrated Coirs India Pvt Ltd, highlighted that the firm is expected to generate employment for about 1,500 people, both directly and indirectly.
Government Oversight and Infrastructure
The state government will oversee the firm's operations and monitor beneficiary numbers. The cluster has secured an electricity connection with a sanctioned load of 110Kw, ensuring robust infrastructure for production.
Historical Context and Event Presence
While a unit supported by the central government's Coir Board already operates in the region, this marks Pollachi's first state government-supported coir firm. The inauguration event in Pollachi on Monday was attended by district collector Pavankumar G Giriyappanavar, Pollachi MP K Eswarasamy, District Industries Centre general manager Shanmugasiva, officials from the Coir Directorate, and other government representatives, underscoring the initiative's importance.
