Southern Railway General Manager Conducts Detailed Inspection of Station Redevelopment Projects

Madurai: In a significant development for railway infrastructure in Tamil Nadu, RN Singh, the General Manager of Southern Railway, personally inspected the ongoing station redevelopment work at Rameswaram and Ramanathapuram stations on Wednesday. The visit was aimed at reviewing the progress of these crucial projects that are set to enhance passenger experience and modernize facilities.

Rameswaram Station: Temple-Inspired Architecture Nears Completion

At Rameswaram station, Singh reviewed the ambitious 112 crore station redevelopment project, which is currently 87% complete. This project is particularly notable for incorporating Rameswaram temple-inspired architecture, blending traditional design elements with modern amenities.

  • Construction of new terminal buildings
  • Installation of five lifts and four escalators
  • Upgradation of platforms to modern standards
  • Enhanced passenger amenities, with special focus on pilgrim facilities

The project is targeted for completion by March, promising to transform the station into a landmark facility that caters to both local commuters and the thousands of pilgrims who visit the sacred town annually.

Ramanathapuram Station: Comprehensive Modernization Under Amrit Bharat Scheme

At Ramanathapuram station, the General Manager inspected work being undertaken under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, a government initiative to upgrade railway stations across India.

Completed work includes:

  1. Provision of two lifts on the existing foot overbridge
  2. Creation of 1.3 square kilometer covered parking space
  3. Relocation of the parcel office, health inspector room, and track machine room
  4. Installation of advanced passenger information systems
  5. Installation of train and coach indication boards
  6. Construction of platform fencing walls for enhanced safety

Work currently in progress includes:

  • Improvement of circulating area with wider lanes for smoother vehicle movement
  • Development of a separate pedestrian pathway
  • Façade works to enhance the station's appearance
  • Construction of a new entry block with waiting hall and reserved lounge
  • Improvements to existing station buildings
  • Provision of an additional six-meter-wide foot overbridge connecting platforms 1, 2, and 3 with a second entry
  • Accessibility features including ramps with handrails, toilets, and booking counters designed for disabled passengers

These comprehensive upgrades at Ramanathapuram station demonstrate Southern Railway's commitment to creating inclusive, modern, and efficient transportation hubs that serve all sections of society while improving operational efficiency.
