Deadly Explosion Rocks Illegal Firecracker Factory in Rajasthan's Alwar District
A catastrophic factory explosion in Rajasthan's Alwar district on Monday morning has claimed the lives of seven workers and left four others with severe, life-threatening burns. The blast occurred around 9 am in Khushkheda, located within the Khairthal-Tijara district, sending shockwaves through the local industrial community.
Factory Masquerading as Garment Unit Exposed
According to official statements from Sumitra Pareek, the additional district magistrate of Khairthal-Tijara, the industrial unit was registered under the name 'Readymate Garment' but was clandestinely operating as an illegal firecracker manufacturing facility. "Seven persons have died in the incident. It was a garment factory, but firecrackers were being manufactured inside it illegally," Pareek confirmed, highlighting the grave regulatory violation.
District Collector Artika Shukla elaborated that no garment-related activities were being conducted at the premises. During the subsequent investigation, authorities discovered small explosive materials and bundles of firecrackers, confirming the illicit operations.
Rescue Operations and Critical Injuries
The explosion triggered a massive fire that took rescue teams over one-and-a-half hours to bring under control. Initial reports indicate that between 12 to 15 workers were inside the factory when three successive explosions occurred. While many managed to escape the inferno, nine workers became trapped, with seven tragically perishing in the flames.
Two workers were rescued from the wreckage and immediately transported to Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital, where they remain in critical condition. Separately, four severely injured workers were referred to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi for specialized treatment.
Victim Identification and Forensic Investigation
The intensity of the blast and subsequent fire left bodies badly charred, complicating identification efforts. Officials have confirmed that three of the deceased have been identified as Mintu, Nitesh, and Sujan, all hailing from Motihari district in Bihar. DNA samples have been collected from the deceased to establish identities, with five workers identified so far. Authorities noted that additional workers from Motihari are among the fatalities.
A forensic team has collected samples of bones and burnt firecrackers from the factory site for analysis. Rescue teams recovered scattered body parts, which were carefully collected in polythene bags for identification purposes.
Evidence of Illegal Operations
Investigators recovered substantial evidence from the factory premises, including:
- Gunpowder and firecracker materials
- Packing boxes for finished products
- A lock that was typically hung on the factory gate during illegal manufacturing operations
CCTV footage from the area captured the moment of the explosion, showing a loud blast followed by visible shaking of the building structure. The factory was registered in the name of Rajendra Kumar but had been leased out, with manager Abhinandan taken into police custody for interrogation.
Government Response and Safety Crackdown
Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma immediately instructed district administrations to carry out relief and rescue operations. He directed Forest Minister Sanjay Sharma to reach Alwar personally, who later visited the blast site and ordered a detailed investigation.
"All industrial units will be checked in the Bhiwadi industrial area. If any violation of compliance is found, action will be taken," Sharma declared, announcing a special inspection drive.
The state government has formed a committee to conduct intensive inspections across the Bhiwadi and Khushkheda industrial areas. District Collector Shukla has ordered inspections of all factories and industrial units within seven days to review:
- Fire safety arrangements and compliance
- Necessary government permissions and licenses
- Worker safety measures and protocols
- Whether units are operating activities beyond their registered purposes
RIICO officials are examining the factory's operations, and a case will be registered against the owner for the illegal activities that led to this tragedy.
