Trichy MSMEs Applaud Budget's Payment Reforms, Decry Investment Shortfalls
Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) organizations in Trichy have responded with mixed reactions to the recent interim budget. While they welcomed the government's focus on ensuring prompt payments through the Tamil Nadu Trade Receivables Discounting System (TN TReDS) platform, there was widespread disappointment over the lack of major Trichy-specific investments aimed at boosting local industrial growth.
Positive Step: TN TReDS Eases MSME Liquidity Concerns
The budget highlighted that a significant number of enterprises have already benefited from the TN TReDS initiative. Specifically, 1,461 enterprises have utilized transactions worth Rs 5,171 crore facilitated through this platform. This system is designed to address the critical issue of delayed payments to MSMEs, thereby easing liquidity constraints and improving cash flow for small businesses across the state.
Infrastructure Allocations: A Silver Lining for Trichy
Ramprakash G B, a representative from the Trichy District Small and Medium Industries Association (TIDISIMMA), acknowledged some positive aspects of the 2026-27 interim budget. He pointed out that allocations for a new TIDEL Park and the Kamarajar Library in Trichy are steps in the right direction. "These projects will strengthen our city's infrastructure and help in retaining local talent, which is crucial for sustainable development," he stated.
Key Gaps: Metro Rail and Industrial Clusters Missing
However, Ramprakash also highlighted several significant gaps in the budget. Unlike other major cities in Tamil Nadu, such as Coimbatore and Madurai, Trichy has been excluded from the metro rail roadmap. This omission is seen as a setback for urban mobility and connectivity in the region.
Furthermore, the budget failed to capitalize on Trichy's established strengths in defence and heavy engineering. "We had high expectations for announcements regarding a dedicated defence industrial park or a heavy engineering cluster. Unfortunately, these were overlooked, missing a key opportunity to leverage our local expertise," he added.
Trade Infrastructure Concerns Raised by Exporters
The Export Import Federation Trichy (EIFT) echoed these concerns, particularly regarding trade infrastructure. EIFT president N Kanagasabapathy expressed disappointment over the lack of measures to strengthen trade facilities in the central region. "Despite having an international airport, the budget did not address long-pending demands such as support for a Free Trade Warehousing Zone (FTWZ) and enhanced air cargo infrastructure. These are essential for boosting exports and economic activity," he explained.
Future Growth: Electronics and AI Clusters Overlooked
MSME representatives further pointed out that the budget missed opportunities to drive future industrial growth. Trichy boasts a robust network of engineering colleges and a burgeoning start-up ecosystem, yet there were no announcements on establishing electronics or artificial intelligence (AI) clusters. This absence is viewed as a missed chance to foster innovation and create high-skilled jobs in emerging sectors.
In summary, while the interim budget's focus on prompt payments through TN TReDS is a welcome move for MSMEs in Trichy, the overall sentiment is one of missed potential. The lack of targeted investments in metro rail, defence, trade infrastructure, and technology clusters has left local businesses calling for more comprehensive support to unlock the region's full economic capabilities.
