Tragic Fall Claims Life of Construction Worker at Bantwal College Site
A devastating construction site accident in Kallige village, Bantwal taluk, has resulted in the death of one worker and left another seriously injured. The incident occurred at an under-construction college building, casting a shadow over workplace safety standards in the region.
Details of the Fatal Incident
The deceased has been identified as Amir Khan, a construction laborer who was working on the project. According to a complaint filed by Mukhtadhar, 37, a resident of West Bengal who was also injured in the accident, the workers were engaged in construction activities arranged by a building contractor. Mukhtadhar had been working as a daily-wage laborer at the site for the past six months.
On Tuesday, while Mukhtadhar was laying laterite stones on the first floor of the building, Amir Khan was working directly above him on the second floor, laying cement blocks. In a sudden and tragic turn of events, Amir accidentally slipped and fell, landing on Mukhtadhar on the first floor. The impact caused both workers to plummet to the ground below.
Immediate Aftermath and Medical Response
The fall rendered Mukhtadhar unconscious. His nephew, Samad, quickly arranged for an ambulance and shifted him to a local hospital. Mukhtadhar regained consciousness during the transportation. After receiving first aid and undergoing medical scans, doctors recommended that he be transferred to Mangaluru for advanced treatment. He was subsequently moved to a private hospital in Deralakatte, where he is currently undergoing medical care for his injuries.
Meanwhile, Samad later informed Mukhtadhar that Amir Khan had sustained severe injuries from the fall from the second floor and tragically succumbed to his injuries before reaching the hospital. Mukhtadhar himself sustained injuries from the fall from the first floor.
Legal Proceedings Initiated
In response to the incident, a case has been registered at the Bantwal Town police station. The charges have been filed under:
- Section 106: Causing death by negligence
- Section 125: Act endangering life or personal safety of others
This legal action underscores the serious nature of the accident and highlights concerns about safety protocols at construction sites. The incident serves as a grim reminder of the risks faced by daily-wage laborers in the construction industry, particularly in under-construction projects where safety measures may sometimes be overlooked.
The community in Bantwal and the broader region are likely to scrutinize this case closely, as it raises important questions about worker protection and accountability in construction activities. The investigation by local authorities is expected to delve deeper into the circumstances that led to this preventable tragedy.
