Mohali 2026: New STP, ZLD Plant & Mega Projects to Transform City's Future
Mohali's 2026 Transformation: STP, Expo City & Highways

As the new year dawns, Mohali is positioned on the brink of a monumental urban transformation. The year 2026 is set to be a landmark period for the city, with a slew of major infrastructure projects, green initiatives, and long-awaited civic upgrades poised to reshape its landscape and redefine its future.

Sustainability Takes Center Stage: Advanced STP and ZLD Plant

In a significant move towards environmental protection, authorities have initiated plans for a state-of-the-art sewage treatment plant (STP) and a common effluent treatment plant (CETP) in Sector 101, IT City, and adjoining areas. This project marks a critical step in managing the rising sewage and industrial effluents from the region's rapid residential and commercial growth.

The facilities will employ cutting-edge technologies, including tertiary treatment, ultra-filtration, and a zero liquid discharge (ZLD) system. This ensures that no treated wastewater is released into the environment, aligning with the latest norms from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB).

GMADA executive engineer Himanshu Sandhu confirmed the progress, stating that a tender for consultancy services for design drawings has been floated. Once finalized, construction will begin. The project aims to maximize water reuse for horticulture, flushing, and industrial purposes, conserving freshwater and safeguarding groundwater sources.

Mega Infrastructure and Urban Expansion

Beyond sustainability, 2026 will see a massive push in physical infrastructure. The ambitious ‘Shaheed Bhagat Singh Expo City’, spread over 183 acres and modeled on Delhi's Pragati Maidan, is expected to commence work. This world-class convention centre is designed to boost large-scale exhibitions and conferences.

Road connectivity is in for a major upgrade. The 27.37-km Mohali–Sirhind highway, part of the Bharatmala project, is likely to become operational, slashing travel time and boosting commerce. Additionally, a new Airport Road from Phase 11 is slated to open by March 2026, easing airport access.

In a massive urban expansion plan, the Punjab government has proposed developing nine new sectors over approximately 6,285 acres of land. This project is expected to accelerate growth and generate substantial employment opportunities.

Boosting Civic Amenities and Healthcare

The year will also bring significant improvements to daily life for Mohali's residents. Upgrades to water supply, sewerage networks, and drainage systems are planned for several localities. The much-anticipated city bus service for VIP City and adjoining areas is expected to launch, with potential electric bus integration, easing commutes for thousands.

Healthcare infrastructure is set for a leap. The Critical Care Unit (CCU) at the government hospital will enhance emergency services, reducing referrals to private facilities. Furthermore, construction work on an AIIMS facility in Sector 83 and a new government hospital building in Sector 66 is likely to begin, strengthening regional healthcare access.

Governance will see a change with Municipal Corporation elections scheduled for 2026, bringing in a new mayor who will shape the city's future priorities. A stalled community centre in Phase 3B-1 is also back on track, with a revised tender floated for its completion.

Collectively, these projects paint a picture of a city aggressively marching towards a future defined by sustainable development, robust infrastructure, and enhanced quality of life. 2026 is poised to be the year Mohali solidifies its identity as a modern, well-planned urban hub in the region.
