Cloudflare Outage Disrupts Zerodha, Groww, Angel One: Second Major Incident in 30 Days
Major Cloudflare Outage Hits Zerodha, Groww, Angel One

A widespread service outage at the US-based internet infrastructure company Cloudflare on Friday caused significant disruptions for some of India's most prominent stock investing platforms, including Zerodha, Groww, and Angel One. This marks the second major Cloudflare failure in less than a month.

Platforms Grind to a Halt During Market Hours

During crucial market trading hours, numerous users of these platforms encountered severe technical issues. Investors took to social media platform X to report a range of problems that hampered their trading activities. The complaints primarily centered around an inability to log into accounts, significant delays in the execution of buy and sell orders, and complete unavailability of the platforms for extended periods.

The timing of the outage amplified user frustration, as it occurred when the markets were active and every second counted for executing time-sensitive trades. The disruption highlighted the heavy reliance of modern fintech services on third-party internet infrastructure providers.

Cloudflare Confirms Outage, Rules Out Cyber Attack

Cloudflare's Chief Technology Officer, Dane Knecht, officially confirmed the network availability issue. In a statement, he clarified that the incident was not the result of a cyber attack. Instead, he attributed the root cause to internal system changes related to logging.

"We are aware of the issue impacting the availability of Cloudflare’s network," Knecht stated. "It was not an attack; root cause was disabling some logging to help mitigate this week’s React CVE. Will share full details in a blog post today. Sites should be back online now, but I understand the frustration this causes and the work being."

His reference to a "React CVE" points to a critical security vulnerability identified in a widely used software library, for which Cloudflare was attempting to implement mitigations.

A Recurring Problem Raises Reliability Concerns

This incident is notably the second major Cloudflare outage in less than 30 days. A similar large-scale disruption last month affected a vast portion of the global internet, bringing down numerous websites and online services worldwide.

The recurrence of such significant outages within a short timeframe raises serious questions about the resilience and redundancy of critical internet infrastructure. For financial platforms where uptime is paramount, these disruptions can lead to tangible financial losses and erode user trust. The event serves as a stark reminder of the interconnected nature of the digital ecosystem, where a single point of failure at a major provider like Cloudflare can have cascading effects on businesses and consumers across the globe, including India's rapidly growing digital investor base.
