A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with US President Donald Trump, the Indian government stated on Thursday that significant progress has been achieved on the India-US interim free trade bilateral agreement, and both nations are in the concluding stages of finalizing the pact.
Foreign Secretary Briefs on G7 Engagements
Briefing reporters about PM Modi's engagements at the G7 summit, foreign secretary Vikram Misri highlighted that India expects the US-Iran interim peace agreement to contribute to sustained peace and stability in the region. Misri noted that both leaders reiterated instructions to officials to conclude the trade agreement at the earliest opportunity.
US Trade Representative to Visit India
Misri announced, "Next week, in fact, US trade representative Jameson Greer will be visiting India to take forward these discussions. In the bilateral meeting between the PM and President Trump yesterday in Evian, this was a major subject of discussion."
India's Stance on US-Iran Peace Deal
Regarding the US-Iran peace deal, the foreign secretary acknowledged that it is natural to have concerns about the agreement, to which Israel is not a party. He stated that India is ready to do whatever it can to address next steps. However, when asked if India would nudge Israel to accept the peace terms, Misri clarified that India is not a party to the conflict and will leave it to the involved parties to decide how to terminate the conflict and chart a roadmap forward.
