CBSE Announces July 28 Supplementary Exam, Students Fear Losing College Seats
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has scheduled the Class 12 supplementary examination for July 28, 2026, a move that has triggered widespread anxiety among students who argue the delayed timeline could derail their undergraduate admissions. The announcement, made on July 1, comes after weeks of student protests and social media campaigns demanding grace marks or a revised passing criteria.
Student Outrage on Social Media
Students took to X (formerly Twitter) to express their frustration. User @abhinet_sharma posted: “CBSE won. We students lost. No grace marks. No revised passing criteria. Just a supplementary exam on 28 July that delays our results, admissions, and future. Students deserve support, not punishment for missing by a few marks.” Another user, @tewwter45, wrote: “CUET aur college admissions start ho gaye hain, hum seats kho rahe hain! @cbseindia29 ab toh jagao! Ya toh grace marks do ya Theory + Practical ke basis par 33% combine karke pass karo.”
Student Swapna (@swapnas_sankar) expressed disappointment with the re-evaluation process: “I applied for re-evaluation in five subjects. In total, only 5 marks were increased. Physics and Bio remained unchanged, even though I strongly feel they deserved a proper review. Why does CBSE seem to deliberately reduce students' marks, even in re-evaluation?”
Delayed Results Threaten College Admissions
The supplementary exam on July 28 means results will be declared only in August or later, after the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) and many college admission cycles have already begun or concluded. Students worry that they will lose their seats in undergraduate programs, especially in central universities and other institutions that rely on CUET scores. The CBSE has not yet announced a specific result date for the supplementary exam, but past trends suggest a delay of at least 3-4 weeks.
Demands for Grace Marks or Combined Passing Criteria
Students have been demanding that CBSE either grant grace marks to those who failed by a small margin or allow a combined passing criteria of 33% across theory and practical marks instead of requiring separate passing in each. The board, however, has not acceded to these requests. In a tweet on June 30, @tewwter45 wrote: “CBSE ignored requests to count theory+practical for the 33% criteria. Now, ultra-late forms & July 28 exams mean late results. Colleges are refusing relief. How will compartment students get admission? You are wasting our year!”
Background and Previous Appeals
The CBSE Class 12 results for the 2025-26 academic year were announced in May 2026. Several students who failed by a narrow margin appealed for re-evaluation, but many reported minimal or no changes. The supplementary exam is the only option for those who did not pass, but the timing has been criticized as insensitive to the academic calendar. Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and the Ministry of Education have been tagged in multiple tweets, but no official response has been issued yet.
Impact on Students' Careers
For many students, the delay could mean losing a year of college education. “Hamara career aapke liye majak nahi hai @cbseindia29. College admissions have started and we are losing seats daily. The compartment exam is on 28 July and results will be delayed. Please show empathy: give grace marks or pass us with 33% (theory + practical combined),” tweeted @tewwter45 on July 1. The CBSE has not indicated any flexibility in its schedule or criteria, leaving students anxious and uncertain about their future.
