Nagpur: NEET is no longer just a test of academic ability but a test of resilience, say aspirants ahead of the retest. Many students from Nagpur, speaking to TOI, attributed their stress to multiple factors — from parental expectations to exam pressure — which has amplified due to the re-examination following the paper leak earlier.
Competition and Uncertainty Fuel Stress
"With lakhs of students appearing for NEET every year, the competition itself becomes a source of constant pressure," said Yash Bhoyar, a NEET aspirant. "Preparing for the exam is not just academically demanding but also mentally exhausting. The expectations can be overwhelming." Referring to recent controversies, Bhoyar added: "Leaks and re-exams create a sense of unfairness and uncertainty, making us question whether our hard work will truly be rewarded."
Beyond Academics: Battling Uncertainty
For many, the challenge now extends beyond academics. "We are not just competing against each other, we are now also battling uncertainty," said Sahil Kodwani. Drop-year aspirants find themselves particularly affected. "Last year's paper was tougher, so this time the exam felt easier and I was fairly confident," said Sahas Kawale. He added that preparing all over again in just one and a half months feels overwhelming.
Psychological Toll on Aspirants
Experts say the psychological toll is becoming harder to ignore. "The academic space has increasingly become a battlefield," said cyber psychologist Rakesh Kriplani. The re-examination has heightened anxiety, as students who had already prepared for the original test now face additional months of study and uncertainty. The pressure is compounded by parental expectations and the high stakes of securing a medical seat in a country where competition is fierce among lakhs of candidates.
Many aspirants expressed that the retest disrupts their mental preparation and forces them to revisit material they had already mastered. The lack of clarity on the exam's fairness due to the leak further erodes trust in the system. As one student noted, the process has become a test not just of knowledge but of emotional endurance.
The situation highlights the need for better mental health support for students facing high-stakes exams. With NEET being a gateway to medical careers, the pressure is immense, and the added burden of a retest only intensifies the stress. As Yash Bhoyar concluded, "We are not just studying; we are surviving."
