The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has announced that the Civil Services Examination (CSE) Mains 2026 will commence on August 21, 2026. This schedule is part of the official UPSC calendar released for the year. Candidates who clear the preliminary examination will be eligible to appear for the Mains.
Exam Schedule and Paper Pattern
The UPSC CSE Mains exam consists of nine papers, all of which are descriptive in nature. The total marks for the Mains are 1750, with an additional 275 marks for the interview stage. The papers are divided into two categories: qualifying and merit-based.
Paper A (one of the Indian languages) and Paper B (English) are qualifying in nature, meaning their marks are not counted for ranking. However, candidates must score at least 25% in each of these papers to qualify. The remaining seven papers—Essay, General Studies (four papers), and Optional Subject (two papers)—are counted for merit.
Detailed Paper Breakdown
- Paper A (Indian Language): 300 marks, qualifying
- Paper B (English): 300 marks, qualifying
- Paper I (Essay): 250 marks
- Paper II (General Studies I): 250 marks
- Paper III (General Studies II): 250 marks
- Paper IV (General Studies III): 250 marks
- Paper V (General Studies IV): 250 marks

Each General Studies paper is of 3 hours duration, while the Essay paper is also 3 hours. The optional subject papers are of 3 hours each as well.
Preparation Tips and Strategy
According to UPSC toppers and experts, candidates should focus on understanding the syllabus thoroughly and practicing answer writing. "The Mains requires a deep understanding of concepts and the ability to articulate answers clearly," said a recent topper. Time management is crucial, as each paper demands extensive writing.
For the optional subject, choose a subject that aligns with your interest and has good study material. Regular revision and solving previous years' papers can significantly improve performance.
Important Dates and Admit Card
The UPSC CSE Preliminary exam is expected to be held in June 2026, with the results likely in July. Admit cards for the Mains will be available on the UPSC website about two weeks before the exam. Candidates are advised to check the official notification for any changes.
The interview stage (personality test) will be conducted after the Mains results, which are expected in early 2027. The final merit list will be based on the combined scores of Mains and interview.
