Inaugural Gajendra Nath Thakuria Memorial Lecture Champions Correct Assamese Language Usage
The Teachers Unit of Dakshin Kamrup College in Mirza successfully organized the first Gajendra Nath Thakuria Memorial Annual Lecture on Wednesday. This significant event focused on the theme "Amar Bhashtu xuddho koi kou aru Likhu Ahok", which translates to "Let's talk and write our language correctly", highlighting the importance of linguistic precision in Assamese.
Honoring a Legacy and Promoting Linguistic Excellence
The lecture served as a tribute to Gajendra Nath Thakuria, the esteemed founder principal of Dakshin Kamrup College, often referred to as the architect of the institution. Dr Niva Thakuria, President of the Teachers Unit, opened the proceedings by illuminating Thakuria's life and contributions, setting a reverent tone for the gathering.
Dr Bhabani Baishya, secretary of the college teachers' unit, elaborated on the meeting's purpose, emphasizing its role in fostering academic and cultural values. The ceremony included a felicitation conducted by Jayanta Kumar Baishya from the Department of Chemistry, and a cultural touch was added with Dr Anuradha Gogoi, Professor of Economics, presenting a traditional Borgeet.
Insights from Eminent Science Writer Dr Dinesh Chandra Goswami
The keynote address was delivered by renowned science writer Dr Dinesh Chandra Goswami, introduced by Dr Partha Pratim Goswami of the Physics Department. In his lecture, Dr Goswami passionately argued that the power of language is limitless and stressed the critical need for proper usage of Assamese in both speech and writing.
He pointed out that societal communication relies heavily on linguistic accuracy, making it imperative for individuals to strive for correctness. Dr Goswami specifically urged parents to be vigilant in teaching their children Assamese, noting that a child's brain remains highly receptive to language learning until the age of four, a crucial period for foundational skills.
Addressing Challenges in Language Preservation
Dr Goswami highlighted a pressing issue facing the Assamese language: the misconception that prolonged usage of incorrect words eventually legitimizes them. He warned that this assumption leads to linguistic decline, undermining the language's integrity over time. His remarks underscored the necessity of proactive efforts to maintain linguistic standards.
Engagement and Conclusion of the Event
Following the lecture, Dr Goswami engaged in an interactive session with students and faculty members, addressing questions from participants and fostering a dynamic exchange of ideas. The event concluded with Dr Niva Thakuria and Dr Bhawani Baishya expressing gratitude to all attendees for ensuring the success of this memorial program.
This inaugural lecture not only honored Gajendra Nath Thakuria's legacy but also reinforced the college's commitment to promoting linguistic excellence and cultural heritage within the Assamese community.
