RCU Resolves Controversy by Appointing Prof Aksh as In-Charge Vice-Chancellor

Rani Channamma University (RCU) in Belagavi has appointed Prof SB Aksh as the in-charge vice-chancellor. This decision comes after a recent controversy over the temporary leadership of the university.

Controversy Erupts Over Charge Handover

The issue started when the regular vice-chancellor, Prof CM Thyagaraja, left for an official tour to Japan. He was away from January 10 to January 18. Before leaving, Prof Thyagaraja handed over charge to the university registrar, Santosh Kamagoudar.

Prof Aksh, who serves as the senior dean and chairman of the commerce department, strongly objected to this move. He called it illegal and against the directives from the governor's office. Prof Aksh submitted a written complaint to the governor to highlight his concerns.

Legal and Caste-Based Allegations Raised

In his complaint letter, Prof Aksh pointed out specific legal issues. He noted that the registrar is a statutory authority under Section 17 of the Rani Channamma University Act. However, the law does not allow the registrar to perform the vice-chancellor's duties during a temporary absence.

Prof Aksh also raised serious allegations of caste-based discrimination. He stated that he belongs to the Scheduled Caste (SC) community. He claimed that denying him the in-charge vice-chancellor post was a deliberate act of discrimination.

University Takes Swift Action to Resolve Dispute

Following the controversy, the university moved quickly to address the situation. Officials resolved the issue by officially entrusting Prof Aksh with the responsibilities of in-charge vice-chancellor.

After receiving the appointment on January 12, Prof Aksh wrote another letter to the governor. In this communication, he stated that since he was now assigned the post, he was withdrawing his previous complaint.

The university's action has brought temporary resolution to the leadership dispute. The appointment ensures proper administrative functioning during the vice-chancellor's absence.
