Uttar Pradesh Government Announces Major Initiative to Promote Indian Knowledge Tradition
The Uttar Pradesh government has unveiled a significant plan to establish research chairs dedicated to promoting the Indian knowledge tradition in higher education institutions across the state. This initiative, with a total allocation of Rs 55 crore, aims to enhance academic infrastructure while preserving and advancing India's intellectual heritage.
Financial Allocation and Implementation Strategy
Under this scheme, 11 universities and colleges with more than 7,500 students and over 75 years of establishment have been identified. Each selected institution will receive financial assistance of Rs 5 crore in phases for setting up the Indian Knowledge Tradition Promotion Research Chair. For the 2026–27 academic session, an initial allocation of Rs 5 crore has been approved to kickstart the process.
Director of Higher Education, BL Sharma, stated that the establishment of these research chairs will be carried out in a phased manner, with the process already initiated. This structured approach ensures a systematic rollout across the state's educational landscape.

The institutions chosen for this prestigious scheme include:
- University of Lucknow (established 1921)
- Shri Jai Narain Misra Postgraduate College (1917)
- Shia Postgraduate College (1919)
- Saket Postgraduate College (1951)
- Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith (1921)
- Tilakdhari Postgraduate College (1914)
- Shibli National College (1883)
- Bareilly College (1837)
- Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar University (1927)
- Agra College (1823)
- DS College Azamgarh (1942)
In addition to these, the government has selected 38 aided non-government colleges that have completed 75 years of establishment under the Infrastructure Development Scheme. Prominent colleges in this category include St John's College (1850), Raja Balwant Singh College (1885), Christ Church College (1866), St Andrew's College (1899), and Meerut College (1892).
