Youth Workforce Growth Boosts India's GDP: IIT Madras Ex-Director

Former IIT Madras director Bhaskar Ramamurthi delivered a compelling address at the 20th convocation of Dhirubhai Ambani University on Saturday. He emphasized a significant trend shaping India's economy.

Youth Influx Driving Economic Production

Ramamurthi explained that India's birth rates have stabilized. However, a lag effect continues to bring millions of young people into the job market each year.

"We have approximately 23 million youngsters entering the workforce every year," he stated. "This trend will likely continue for another eight to ten years before it begins to slow down."

He highlighted a crucial demographic shift. Fewer people are leaving the workforce compared to previous years. The annual number of people passing away is now roughly half the number of new entrants.

"Net-net, there are just more people entering the workforce," Ramamurthi noted. "This directly translates to more production happening across the country."

This sustained influx of young workers is creating more income. It is actively contributing to the nation's Gross Domestic Product growth.

University Celebrates Student Success

The convocation ceremony was a landmark event for Dhirubhai Ambani University. The institution awarded a total of 649 degrees. This included 295 postgraduate qualifications.

Director General Prof. Tathagata Bandyopadhyay shared impressive placement statistics. During the 2024-25 academic year, over 125 major companies visited the campus.

These recruiters included global giants like Google, Amazon, Nvidia, Microsoft, and Bank of America. They offered valuable placement opportunities to the graduating students.

Leadership Messages for Graduates

University President Tina Anil Ambani shared an inspiring message with the new graduates. She encouraged them to focus on human-centered design as a key differentiator in their careers.

"While you continue to push the envelope in terms of technology-driven innovation, let human-centered design be your differentiator," she advised.

Ambani also stressed the importance of maintaining physical and mental health. She reminded students that well-being underpins every professional endeavor.

"While chasing your goals, never lose sight of your greatest asset, your health," she said. "Physical and mental health show you up in times of stress and struggle."

The convocation served as both a celebration of academic achievement and a forum for discussing India's economic future. The insights from leaders like Ramamurthi underscore the powerful role a young workforce plays in national development.
