A tragic incident unfolded in Greater Noida's Knowledge Park 3 area, where a second-year BTech student lost his life after jumping from the fourth floor of his private hostel. The incident occurred hours after he was reprimanded by hostel authorities for consuming alcohol, according to police reports.
Sequence of Events Leading to the Tragedy
Udit Soni, a student who had come to Greater Noida from Jhansi's Bhognipur, returned to his hostel late on Friday evening with two friends after drinking. Hostel authorities confronted the three students for violating rules and allegedly recorded a video of the incident, which was later sent to Udit's father, Vijay.
Udit's father subsequently spoke to him over the phone, scolding him and warning that he would be removed from the hostel and brought back home. A senior police officer stated that Udit appeared visibly distressed after the call and jumped from the fourth floor shortly afterwards.
Allegations of Assault and Humiliation
Udit's friends have claimed that he felt deeply humiliated by the incident and accused hostel staff of physically assaulting him. One of Udit's friends, Harshit, a BBA student who lived in the same hostel, provided detailed accounts of what transpired.
"Udit, Chetan and I had stepped out earlier in the evening and returned around 9pm, well before the hostel's 10pm deadline," Harshit explained. "But the hostel management imposed a fine for drinking. We accepted it and Udit paid Rs 10,000."
Harshit alleged that after the fine was paid, hostel staff assaulted Udit in front of others. "There was a large crowd. They hit him with pipes and other objects," he claimed, adding that the incident deeply affected Udit emotionally.
Escalation and Final Moments
According to Harshit, Udit later went upstairs, remarking that even his father had never hit him. He appeared depressed after the incident. Other students reported that Udit told his friends he was going to the balcony to wish a friend on his birthday.
By the time Harshit and other friends found him, Udit had already jumped from the fourth floor. Harshit claimed this was the first instance where hostel staff had assaulted someone in such a manner.
Police Investigation and Legal Action
Police officials confirmed they are examining all claims as part of their investigation. Based on a complaint filed by Udit's father, a case of abetment to suicide has been registered against the hostel warden and two staff members. The warden and one staffer have been detained for questioning.
A separate case has been registered against unknown persons for vandalizing hostel property during subsequent protests. Police have formed a special team to probe the matter thoroughly.
Evidence Collection and Witness Statements
Investigators are examining CCTV footage from the hostel premises and questioning several witnesses. Another police source revealed that initial checks of CCTV footage showed Udit and his friends returning to the hostel around 9.25pm on Friday.
Udit was rushed to a nearby hospital after the fall but was declared dead on arrival, confirming the tragic outcome of the incident.
Student Anger and Campus Unrest
The incident sparked significant anger among students, some of whom vandalized parts of the hostel and damaged buses parked nearby. Police personnel had to be deployed to bring the situation under control, while senior officers visited the campus to hold discussions with students and defuse tensions.
The student community expressed outrage over the alleged mistreatment, with many calling for stricter regulations and better treatment of students in private hostels across educational hubs.
This tragic event has raised serious questions about hostel management practices, student mental health support systems, and the enforcement of rules in educational institutions. The investigation continues as authorities work to determine the complete sequence of events and assign responsibility where appropriate.
