CBSE's Two-Exam System for Class 10: First Mandatory, Second Optional for Improvement

New Delhi, February 9, 2026: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is set to implement a two-exam system for Class 10 students in 2026, aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. This move has sparked questions from students, parents, and schools regarding structure, eligibility, flexibility, and evaluation. In a detailed clarification, CBSE Controller of Examinations Sanyam Bharadwaj addressed key concerns about the new framework.

Structure and Schedule of the Two Exams

CBSE will conduct two Board examinations for Class 10 in 2026. The first examination is scheduled from February 17 to March 9, while the second will run from May 15 to June 1. Both exams will cover the same syllabus, ensuring consistency in content and difficulty levels. Bharadwaj emphasized that it is mandatory for all students to appear in the first examination. The second exam is designed as an opportunity to improve performance from the initial attempt. He advised students to prepare seriously for the first exam and not rely on the second as a fallback option.

Optional Second Exam and Final Marks Calculation

The second Board examination is entirely optional. Students may choose to appear only if they wish to enhance their scores. For the final result, the better score from the two exams will be considered in computing the overall result. Bharadwaj urged parents to avoid putting undue pressure on their children to take the second exam if improvement is unnecessary, highlighting the importance of mental well-being and realistic academic goals.

Subject Limits and Eligibility for Improvement

Under the new scheme, students can appear for improvement in a maximum of three subjects during the second examination. This limit applies to all subjects, with no specific restrictions on which ones can be retaken. For students who fail in some subjects in the first exam, specific rules apply. Those who fail in two subjects will be placed in the compartment category and allowed to appear in the second examination. However, students who fail or do not appear in three or more subjects will not be eligible for the second exam and will have to wait for the main Board examinations in 2027.

Syllabus Consistency and Special Accommodations

The syllabus for the second examination will remain identical to that of the first, ensuring no additional burden on students. In terms of flexibility, students participating in sports and those belonging to the Children With Special Needs (CWSN) category will receive accommodations in both examinations, in line with existing CBSE policies. This includes provisions for extra time, alternative testing formats, and other necessary support to ensure fair opportunities for all learners.

This initiative aims to reduce exam-related stress and provide multiple chances for academic success, reflecting CBSE's commitment to holistic education under NEP 2020 guidelines.
