CBSE Announces On-Screen Marking for Class 12 Exams Starting 2026
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has unveiled a significant shift in its evaluation process, introducing on-screen marking (OSM) for Class 12 board examinations beginning in 2026. This digital initiative aims to enhance efficiency, transparency, and environmental sustainability in the assessment of answer books.
Key Details and Implementation Timeline
According to CBSE Examination Controller Sanyam Bhardwaj, the board will operationalize on-screen marking offices between August and September 2025, following approval from the Ministry of Education. However, evaluation for Class 10 answer books will continue in the traditional physical mode as before, ensuring a phased approach to this technological upgrade.
Benefits of Digital Marking System
The move to on-screen marking is expected to bring multiple advantages. It will improve coordination among evaluators and reduce manual intervention, thereby minimizing totalling errors. Additionally, the digital format promotes environmental sustainability by cutting down on paper usage.
Teachers can now participate in evaluation remotely from their schools, allowing them to continue regular duties without disruption. This wider participation ensures involvement from educators across all affiliated schools globally, fostering a more inclusive assessment process.
Operational Requirements and Compliance
Schools have been directed to prepare computer labs with specific system specifications, reliable internet connections, and uninterrupted power supplies to facilitate the on-screen marking process. They must also update teacher data on an online portal. Non-compliance with these directives will be treated as an attempt to compromise the evaluation, potentially delaying result declarations for the school.
Impact on Verification and Manpower
With the implementation of OSM, post-result verification of marks will no longer be necessary, leading to a reduced requirement for verification manpower. This streamlines the overall evaluation workflow, making it faster and more accurate.
