Educationist S S Rajagopalan, Samacheer Kalvi Member, Dies at 95

Senior educationist S S Rajagopalan, a distinguished member of the Muthukumaran panel established to implement the Samacheer Kalvi (uniform system of school education) in Tamil Nadu under the late Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, passed away in a hospital in Chennai late on Tuesday. He was 95 years old, leaving behind a legacy of educational reform and advocacy.

A Life Dedicated to Education

An English teacher who also taught mathematics, Rajagopalan embarked on his career in the early 1950s at a government-aided school in Coimbatore. Through dedication and expertise, he rose to become the headmaster of the institution, where he was known for innovative practices such as allowing students to frame their own conduct rules, as recalled by his relative K Raju.

Post-Retirement Contributions and Advocacy

After retiring in 1990, Rajagopalan moved to Madras (now Chennai) and briefly served as a senate member of Madras University. His influence extended beyond retirement, as he maintained close ties with three chief ministers: Kamaraj, Karunanidhi, and MGR. He also contributed to broader educational frameworks by serving on the technical committee of the All-India Forum for Right Education and working with the State Platform for Common School System (SPCSS-TN) in Tamil Nadu.

Rajagopalan was a staunch advocate for using the mother tongue as the medium of instruction in government schools. During his tenure on the Samacheer Kalvi committee, he faced accusations that the Tamil Nadu syllabus was inferior to CBSE or other syllabi. In response, he conducted a year-long comparative study, which established that the TN syllabus was, in fact, more academically fulfilling, as noted by SPCSS-TN general secretary P B Prince Gajendra Babu.

Political and Social Tributes

Condolences poured in from various quarters following his demise. Chief Minister M K Stalin expressed deep sadness, stating, "I am deeply saddened to learn of the demise of senior educationist S S Rajagopalan. He showed immense concern for the development of education in TN and for student welfare. His passing is a great loss to the education sector."

Dravidar Kazhagam (DK) president K Veeramani highlighted Rajagopalan's opposition to the National Education Policy (NEP) and NEET, describing his death as a loss to the struggle for the right to education. Additionally, CPI leader R Mutharasan and senior party functionaries paid floral tributes to Rajagopalan's portrait at the party's state headquarters, honoring his contributions.

Legacy and Final Arrangements

In accordance with his wishes and contributions to medical research, Rajagopalan's body has been handed over to Ramachandra Medical College. His life's work continues to inspire educators and policymakers in Tamil Nadu and beyond, emphasizing the importance of accessible, quality education rooted in local contexts.
