Education Experts Advocate for Physical Education in Primary School Curriculum

Educationists and experts in Chennai have strongly advocated for the inclusion of physical education (PE) in the curriculum from Classes I to V. They emphasize that early exposure to sports and physical activities is crucial for identifying children's aptitudes and fostering lifelong fitness habits.

State Platform for Common School System Feedback

The State Platform for Common School System (SPCSS-TN) has provided feedback to the draft curriculum released by the state government. They recommend that lessons, activities, and games designed to encourage interest in PE should begin at the primary level.

SPCSS-TN general secretary P B Prince Gajendra Babu stated, "Studies indicate that a child's aptitude and attitude can be identified from the age of eight, and physical activities are the most effective means to achieve this. Therefore, the school education department should introduce PE right from the early years."

Current Implementation and Global Comparisons

Although Tamil Nadu's government schools have a PE syllabus for Classes I to XII, it is primarily implemented from Class VI onwards. This gap leaves nearly 9,000 middle schools without adequate PE programs.

TN Physical Education Teachers and Physical Directors Association president Sankaraperumal highlighted, "In countries like China, children begin sports training as early as five years old, which significantly contributes to their Olympic success. Similar proactive steps are necessary here to enhance our educational and athletic outcomes."

Key Recommendations for Curriculum Enhancement

  • Integrate PE into the daily schedule for Classes I to V to ensure consistent physical activity.
  • Develop age-appropriate games and activities that make PE engaging and fun for young students.
  • Train teachers specifically in primary-level PE to effectively implement the curriculum.
  • Monitor and assess the impact of early PE on children's health, aptitude identification, and academic performance.

Experts argue that early introduction of PE not only promotes physical health but also aids in the holistic development of children, preparing them for future challenges in both sports and academics.
