Goa Library to Add Two Mobile Vans for Remote Areas

Goa State Central Library Expands Mobile Library Service with New Vans

The Goa State Central Library, famous for its innovative "library-on-wheels" bus, is set to significantly broaden its reach by introducing two new mobile library vans. This strategic expansion aims to serve remote regions and government schools with smaller student populations across the state.

Proposal for Enhanced Outreach

Sulaksha Kolmule, curator of the Goa State Central Library, revealed that a proposal to procure these new vans is currently in development and will be submitted to the government this year. "We require at least one van in the north and another in the south," Kolmule stated. "These will be smaller, lighter vehicles, not full-size buses, allowing us to access areas unreachable by our current large bus." Officials are optimistic about funding allocation once the proposal gains approval.

Addressing Accessibility Gaps

The library currently operates a single mobile bus, established through a corporate social responsibility initiative. While it has gained popularity among students and local communities, there is a pressing need to extend services to more villages and smaller schools. The new vans will supplement the existing bus, specifically targeting locations with limited access to books and educational resources.

Updated Collections and Reading Culture

Kolmule emphasized that the mobile vans will feature an updated book collection, reflecting the library's commitment to fostering a reading culture. "The mobile library programme has helped nurture a reading culture across Goa, especially among students in government schools and villages with limited library access," she noted. This year, the library has already added numerous new books, with further expansions planned for 2026. The collection includes:

  • Fiction and non-fiction titles
  • Historical works
  • Competitive exam guides

This diverse range caters to various readers, particularly students preparing for examinations, ensuring comprehensive educational support.

Impact on Community and Education

The initiative underscores the library's dedication to enhancing literacy and educational opportunities in underserved areas. By deploying smaller, more agile vehicles, the Goa State Central Library aims to bridge the gap in book accessibility, promoting lifelong learning and academic success across the state.
