Government School Headmaster Suspended Over Unsafe Student Transport Incident

The headmaster in-charge of a government higher primary school in Balenja village, Belthangady taluk, has been placed under suspension following a serious breach of student safety protocols. The action was taken on Thursday after it was alleged that the official organized the transportation of approximately 70 students in two goods vehicles during a recent educational field visit.

Details of the Incident and Official Response

According to Tarakesari, the block education officer (BEO) of Belthangady, Kiran Kumar KS of the Government Upgraded Higher Primary School in Balenja was suspended by the Dakshina Kannada deputy director of public instruction (DDPI). The controversial incident occurred on February 9, when the school arranged a trip to a local beekeeping farm as part of its Eco Club activities.

Instead of securing proper passenger transport, the headmaster allegedly utilized a tipper truck and a pickup vehicle to ferry the children to and from the site. This decision blatantly violated established transport guidelines and student safety norms, drawing sharp criticism from authorities and the community alike.

Viral Footage and Parental Complaints Trigger Action

The situation came to light after videos depicting students being transported in these unsafe conditions circulated widely on social media platforms. The widespread dissemination of the footage prompted immediate intervention by the education department. Concurrently, the BEO's office received an oral complaint from concerned parents, further escalating the matter.

In response, a team of officials, including the BEO, conducted a thorough investigation. They sought a formal explanation from the headmaster and held detailed discussions with parents to verify the incident's specifics. "Parents send their children to school trusting teachers, and we should not break that trust," stated DDPI GS Shashidhar, emphasizing the gravity of the breach.

Legal and Administrative Consequences

Shashidhar confirmed that the suspension order was issued based on the compelling video evidence and other information gathered by the department. He reiterated that schools must exclusively use passenger vehicles with valid documentation and adhere to all required safety compliance measures when transporting children.

The suspension has been formally enacted under the Karnataka Civil Services (Conduct) Rules, 2021, and the Karnataka State Child Protection Policy. This episode serves as a stark reminder that student safety cannot be compromised under any circumstances, as highlighted by the DDPI.

Police Case Registered and Ongoing Investigations

In a parallel development, a case has been registered at the Venoor Police Station based on a complaint filed by Dharanendra of Balanja village in Belthangady taluk. The charges have been filed under Section 281 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Sections 66 and 192(A) of the Indian Motor Vehicles (IMV) Act.

Authorities have announced that further verification will be conducted regarding the school authorities responsible for arranging the transportation. Appropriate legal action will be initiated based on the findings of this ongoing investigation. The school, which caters to students from classes I to VIII, is now under heightened scrutiny to ensure such lapses do not recur.
