A significant protest by postgraduate mass communication students at Jadavpur University in Kolkata on Tuesday led to the abrupt cancellation of scheduled walk-in interviews for engaging guest faculty members. The interviews, which were actively underway for positions in mass communication and journalism within the university's adult, continuing education, and extension department, were called off following the student agitation.
Protest Targets Professor's Inclusion on Interview Panel
The core of the student protest centered on the inclusion of Professor Santwan Chattopadhyay on the interview panel. Students raised strong objections, citing allegations made against him in 2024 for reportedly awarding marks without properly checking examination papers. This historical context fueled concerns about the integrity and impartiality of the faculty selection process.
"The inclusion of Chattopadhyay on the panel raises serious concerns regarding the impartiality and fairness of the entire recruitment process," stated one of the protesting students, highlighting the collective apprehension. Another candidate expressed disappointment, noting, "It was deeply disappointing because many of us had taken special leave from our commitments specifically for this interview opportunity."
University Response and Confidentiality Concerns
In response to the controversy, Professor Santwan Chattopadhyay defended the university's procedures, emphasizing confidentiality. "The constitution of the interview panel is a strictly confidential matter determined by the university administration. Divulging the names of panel members is highly unfortunate, and appropriate disciplinary action must be initiated against those responsible," he asserted.
Rajyeswar Sinha, the assistant general secretary of the Jadavpur University Teachers' Association (JUTA), commented on the incident's broader implications. "Such behavior by a section of students negatively affects the public perception and academic reputation of the university. It is an unfortunate development that disrupts essential administrative functions," he remarked.
