Karnataka Schools to Function Normally During Bharat Bandh Despite Mid-Day Meal Workers' Protest

The Department of School Education and Literacy in Karnataka has officially announced that all schools across the state will operate normally on Thursday, unaffected by the Bharat bandh called by various labour and trade unions. This nationwide strike is a protest against the policies of the Union government, but the state education authorities have taken a firm stance to ensure educational continuity.

District Commissioners Granted Decision-Making Authority

Vikas Kishor Suralkar, the Commissioner for School Education, stated that district commissioners have been authorized to take necessary decisions in case of any untoward incidents arising from the bandh. This delegation of power aims to provide local authorities with the flexibility to address specific situations promptly and effectively, ensuring minimal disruption to school operations.

Mid-Day Meal Workers' Protest Poses Potential Challenge

However, a significant complication arises as the Bharat bandh protest is backed by mid-day meal workers, who play a crucial role in Karnataka's school nutrition program. The state has approximately 1.2 lakh school kitchen workers involved in preparing and serving meals under the PM Poshan Shakti Nirman Project. District officials have been instructed to actively convince these workers not to join the protest to maintain the regular functioning of the mid-day meal scheme.

Alternative Arrangements Mandated for Meal Disruptions

In the event that mid-day meal workers do participate in the protest, schools are required to make alternative arrangements to ensure students still receive their meals. A note issued by the PM Poshan Shakti Nirman Project explicitly directs schools to implement contingency plans if kitchen staff join the strike. This proactive measure underscores the department's commitment to both educational and nutritional support for students, even amidst potential labor unrest.

The decision to keep schools open reflects the Karnataka government's priority on maintaining academic schedules and minimizing disruptions for students. By empowering district commissioners and planning for meal contingencies, the education department aims to navigate the challenges posed by the Bharat bandh while upholding its responsibilities to the state's schoolchildren.
