Maharashtra Education Department Launches Probe After Child Locked in School Overnight

The Maharashtra education department has initiated a comprehensive investigation following a deeply concerning incident where a four-year-old child was accidentally locked inside a school classroom for an entire night in Khaparkheda, on the outskirts of Nagpur. The department has formally requested a detailed report to understand the circumstances and failures that led to this alarming breach of safety.

Minister Directs Immediate Inquiry and Announces Safety Overhaul

Minister of State for School Education, Pankaj Bhoyar, confirmed he has directed the Deputy Director of Education for the Nagpur division to conduct a thorough inquiry and submit a report at the earliest possible opportunity. The minister emphasized that the safety of children is an absolute priority and there can be no compromise on security within school premises.

"I read the report in TOI and immediately asked the deputy director, education, to submit a detailed report. Safety of children is paramount. There can be no compromise when it comes to their security in school premises," Minister Bhoyar stated.

Details of the Disturbing Incident

According to preliminary reports, the young boy wandered into a classroom while playing near the school premises. Tragically, he was inadvertently locked inside when staff members closed the building for the day without conducting a final inspection of all areas. The child was discovered safe the following morning, bringing immense relief to his family and local residents. However, the episode has ignited serious questions regarding the adequacy of safety protocols and supervision in educational institutions.

Strict Action Promised and New SOPs Unveiled

Minister Bhoyar has vowed that strict disciplinary action will be taken against any individuals found responsible for negligence once the inquiry is complete. "If there was negligence at any level, accountability will be fixed. Schools are entrusted with care of children, and even a single lapse is unacceptable," he asserted.

In a significant move to prevent future occurrences, the minister announced that the department will soon issue a clear Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for securing school premises at the end of each day. The proposed mandatory guidelines will include:

  • A physical verification of every classroom, toilet, playground, and all accessible spaces before gates are locked.
  • The introduction of a checklist-based system to clearly assign and document responsibility.
  • A requirement for a designated staff member to perform a final round to ensure no child remains inside.
  • Potential advice for schools to maintain a daily closing register, signed by the head of the institution or an authorized official.

Focus on Constant Supervision for Young Students

Bhoyar stressed that schools must treat student safety as a non-negotiable priority, particularly for younger children. "Children, especially those in pre-primary and primary sections, require constant supervision," he noted. The education department is expected to meticulously review the Nagpur division's report before deciding on any further administrative or disciplinary measures to reinforce safety standards across the state.
