Meghalaya Board Postpones Class 12 Exams After Tribal Clashes in West Garo Hills

The Meghalaya Board of School Education has announced the postponement of two crucial Class 12 examinations in the West Garo Hills district. This decision comes in the wake of violent clashes that erupted between tribal and non-tribal groups over the nomination process for local council elections. Officials confirmed the move to PTI, citing safety concerns for students and staff.

Examinations Rescheduled Due to Unrest

The board has specifically deferred the Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) Examination papers for Music and Anthropology. These exams were originally scheduled for March 11 and March 12, respectively, but will now be held on alternative dates to be announced later. Importantly, this postponement applies exclusively to West Garo Hills, with examinations in all other districts of Meghalaya proceeding as per the existing timetable.

TR Laloo, the board’s Director Accreditation and Controller of Examinations, stated, "The HSSLC examinations, scheduled for March 11 (Music) and March 12 (Anthropology), stand cancelled for West Garo Hills only. The same shall be rescheduled for some other dates to be notified later." This precautionary measure aims to ensure the well-being of over 29,000 students appearing for the HSSLC examinations this year.

Curfew Imposed Following Deadly Clashes

The decision to postpone the exams was directly linked to the imposition of a curfew in parts of West Garo Hills after incidents of violence. According to PTI reports, two individuals were killed in police firing during clashes between tribal and non-tribal groups on Tuesday. The conflict stemmed from disputes over the nomination process for local council polls, escalating tensions in the region.

In response to the violence, the government has taken stringent measures, including deploying the Army to restore order and control the situation. Laloo emphasized that the board’s action was a necessary step to protect students and examination personnel from potential harm amidst the ongoing unrest.

Impact on Educational Schedule

While the postponement disrupts the academic calendar for West Garo Hills, the board assures that arrangements will be made to minimize long-term effects on students. The rescheduled dates for the Music and Anthropology papers will be communicated promptly to allow adequate preparation time. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to ensure a safe environment for conducting examinations once normalcy returns.

This incident highlights the broader challenges of maintaining educational continuity during periods of social and political turmoil. The Meghalaya Board’s proactive approach underscores its commitment to student safety while navigating complex local dynamics.
