Neha Daga's Paathshala: A Beacon of Hope for Underprivileged Children in Nuapada
In the quiet town of Khariar Road in Nuapada district, a remarkable transformation has been unfolding over the past eight years. Neha Daga, a 43-year-old former teacher with an MCA degree, has turned her home into a sanctuary for underprivileged children, providing free education, guidance, and a safe haven that has quietly but profoundly impacted young lives across the community.
From Outrage to Action: The Birth of Paathshala
What began as a single woman's heartfelt outrage at witnessing slum children scavenging for burnt firecrackers during Diwali has blossomed into Paathshala, a grassroots initiative dedicated to shaping futures through learning, discipline, and compassion. In 2018, Neha, who previously taught at a school in Delhi, established Paathshala with a clear mission: to steer children away from negative influences and offer them a fair chance at life. Today, this initiative stands as a testament to her unwavering commitment.
A Holistic Approach to Education and Development
Every day after school, children from classes III to XII flock to Neha's home, where they receive comprehensive support entirely free of cost. Neha personally teaches each child, ensuring they grasp core subjects, and she even hires an Odia tutor to help them keep pace with their schoolwork. Beyond academics, Paathshala offers a rich array of activities:
- Collecting and distributing old books and stationery to ensure no child lacks essential resources.
- Conducting sessions in general knowledge, art and craft, moral education, and social service to foster well-rounded development.
- Transforming her home into a creative workshop during summer vacations, with free classes in art, dance, and mehendi to nurture talents and creativity.
Empowering the Next Generation: Success Stories and Impact
This year, 34 slum children from various parts of Nuapada attend Paathshala in batches. Neha goes beyond traditional teaching by training them to operate laptops, encouraging them to avoid bad influences, and motivating them to join the mainstream workforce. Her efforts have yielded tangible results, with several students pursuing higher studies or securing stable jobs.
One of the brightest examples is Arjun Jaal, who joined Paathshala as a Class VII student and now works in Bengaluru after completing his mechanical engineering degree. His father, Jagdish, a labourer, expressed deep gratitude, stating, "She not only educated my son but shaped him into a good human being. Whatever he is today, it is because of Neha madam."
Family Support and Future Vision
Neha's husband, Nishant, a businessman and vice-chairman of NAC-Khariar, has been her strongest supporter since their marriage in 2008. Together, they have two sons, and Nishant's backing has been crucial to Paathshala's sustainability. Reflecting on her journey, Neha shared, "My mission is to integrate underprivileged kids into the mainstream through education. I have been able to bring smiles to their faces because my family stands with me."
As Paathshala continues to grow, it serves as an inspiring model of how individual compassion and community-driven efforts can create lasting change, offering hope and opportunity to those who need it most.
