A 17-year-old student tragically passed away on Wednesday after collapsing during his school's annual sports meet in Odisha's Sundargarh district. The incident has sent shockwaves through the educational community.
Tragedy Strikes During Relay Race
The victim, identified as Jaydeep Sagar Beck, was a Class XI student at the Eklavya Model Residential School located in Bhawanipur. The two-day annual sports event had commenced on Tuesday. On the second day, Jaydeep participated in the 200-metre relay race. After completing his run, he reportedly felt unwell, walked off the track, and sat down near the field before collapsing shortly after.
Emergency Response and Hospitalisation
The school nurse immediately examined Jaydeep and administered CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation). As his condition continued to worsen, he was urgently transported on a motorcycle to the Govt Medical College & Hospital in Sundargarh. Despite all efforts, the attending doctors declared him dead upon arrival. His parents rushed to the hospital after receiving the devastating news.
Several officials and school staff also reached the hospital, including:
- The school's principal and teachers
- Jaydeep's classmates
- District welfare officer Bhagirathi Patel
- The project administrator of the Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA)
Aftermath and Official Statements
The exact cause of death is still awaited, but preliminary reports from officials suggest the teenager may have suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. In the wake of the tragedy, the school authorities cancelled all remaining events of the sports meet.
Sundargarh Town police have sent the body for a post-mortem examination. The report will determine the precise medical reason behind the death, after which the body will be handed over to his grieving family. Jaydeep was the only son in his family and is survived by his parents, who include a father working as a driver, and two younger sisters.
District welfare officer Bhagirathi Patel stated that the government has been informed about the incident. "This is a very sad and unfortunate incident. After receiving instructions from the government, further action will be taken," Patel said. The community mourns the loss of a young life cut short during a school event meant for celebration and fitness.
