Congress MLA Pargat Singh Slams Punjab Government Over Board Examination Lapses

Former minister and Congress MLA Pargat Singh on Friday launched a scathing criticism of the Punjab government's claims of ushering in an "education revolution", alleging significant administrative and technical failures in the conduct of board examinations by the Punjab School Education Board.

Major Exam Paper Discrepancy Alleged

Pargat Singh alleged that a serious error occurred in the Class VIII Science question paper, where three questions carrying a total of 15 marks were missing from the Punjabi and Gurmukhi versions. According to his claims, while the Hindi and English versions reportedly contained all 30 questions as intended, the Punjabi medium students were left with an incomplete paper.

"This is not just a minor oversight but a grave administrative lapse that has directly impacted hundreds of thousands of students," Pargat stated, demanding that responsibility be fixed for what he termed a systemic failure.

Widespread Impact on Students

The Congress leader claimed that this alleged error affected more than 300,000 Punjabi medium students across Punjab. He calculated that due to the omission of these questions, students effectively lost nearly 19% of the total marks available in the Science examination.

"Such mistakes can have devastating consequences on students' academic performance and future prospects," Pargat emphasized. "They should not be treated lightly or dismissed as isolated incidents."

Questioning the "Education Revolution" Claims

Directly challenging the Punjab government's repeated references to an "education revolution", Pargat Singh pointed to what he described as fundamental flaws in the system. He argued that if teachers lack adequate training and support, it reflects a broader failure of educational governance.

The Congress MLA referenced remarks attributed to Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains during recent school inspections, where the minister reportedly pointed to shortcomings in teaching standards. "If teachers are not adequately trained, it is the government's responsibility to address this deficiency," Pargat asserted. "The minister should not shift the blame onto government school teachers who are working under challenging conditions."

Allegations of Unfulfilled Promises

Pargat further alleged that despite promises of comprehensive educational reform after the Aam Aadmi Party formed the government in Punjab under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, the ground reality in schools remains largely unchanged. He claimed that the much-touted transformation has failed to materialize in practical terms.

The Congress leader also made additional allegations regarding the politicization of educational institutions. He claimed that government schools were being painted in colors associated with the ruling party, suggesting this represented an attempt to bring partisan politics into the educational sphere.

Demands for Immediate Action

Pargat Singh presented several demands for immediate government action:

  1. Thorough investigation into the board examination discrepancies
  2. Accountability for those responsible for the alleged lapses
  3. Priority filling of vacant posts for principals, headmasters, and teachers
  4. Comprehensive review of teacher training programs
  5. Depoliticization of educational institutions

The controversy highlights ongoing tensions between the opposition Congress party and the ruling AAP government in Punjab regarding educational governance and implementation of promised reforms. As the debate continues, thousands of students and their families await clarity on how the examination discrepancies will be addressed and what measures will be taken to prevent similar issues in future assessments.
