Punjab Education Minister Takes Swift Action on Roofless School in Fazilka

In a decisive response to a troubling report, Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains has ordered the immediate reconstruction of a government primary school in Basti Hazur Singh, Fazilka district. The action follows a TOI report that highlighted the dire plight of students forced to study in a roofless classroom, exposing them to harsh weather conditions and compromising their learning environment.

Immediate Remedial Measures Announced

Minister Bains has directed concerned officials to start remedial work without delay, ensuring that the building is reconstructed promptly. He emphasized that this is not merely a political gesture but a personal commitment, stating, "This school will have a new building within the next six months, and it is not a political statement but a personal guarantee." The minister also plans to personally visit the school shortly to oversee the transformation process, underscoring his dedication to resolving the issue.

Addressing Broader Infrastructure Challenges

Highlighting the larger context of school infrastructure in Punjab, Bains noted that the state has nearly 20,000 government schools, many of which suffer from decades of neglect and are in extremely poor condition. He acknowledged the ongoing efforts of the Mann government, which has transformed hundreds of schools in recent years through renovation and upgradation projects. "Transforming all schools is a journey, and the government is steadily marching towards that goal with commitment and transparency," he added, reflecting a broader strategy to improve educational facilities across Punjab.

Commitment to Educational Reform

The swift action in Fazilka is part of a larger initiative to enhance school infrastructure and ensure safe learning environments for all students. By addressing specific cases like the roofless classroom in Basti Hazur Singh, the government aims to set a precedent for timely interventions and accountability in education governance.
