Student Clashes Continue for Third Day at Andhra University Campus
Tension mounted on the Andhra University campus in Visakhapatnam following clashes between student organizations, with the situation persisting for three consecutive days. The conflict involves the Akhila Bharateya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP), affiliated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the Student Federation of India (SFI) and All India Students Federation (AISF), which are linked to Communist parties.
University Issues Emergency Orders
In response to the escalating unrest, the University Management issued emergency orders on Friday, explicitly prohibiting any religious or political meetings, rallies, or gatherings on the campus premises. To enforce these measures and control the volatile situation, both AU security personnel and local law enforcement police were deployed extensively across the university grounds.
Root Cause of the Clashes
The clashes initially flared up on Tuesday night when ABVP conducted a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) program at the basketball ground in front of the Law College. According to reports, the SFI student wing attempted to disrupt the event, alleging that ABVP was organizing religious programs, which led to a confrontation. Security staff intervened promptly to separate the warring groups and prevent further violence.
Protests and Political Statements
Following the initial incident, ABVP staged a protest at the Vice Chancellor's Office on Wednesday, while SFI and AISF organized their own demonstration on Thursday. Despite instructions from the AU Vice Chancellor, the student organizations did not comply and continued their attempts to stage protests, highlighting the deep-seated tensions.
Registrar Prof K Rambabu held a meeting with representatives from the student organizations, advising them strongly to avoid any involvement in clashes and to maintain peace on campus. In a related development, BJP State President PVN Madhav issued a statement accusing student wings affiliated with Communist parties of provoking ABVP, which had organized the RSS Sakha programmes.
Ongoing Concerns and Campus Security
The repeated clashes have raised significant concerns about campus safety and the potential for further disruptions. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to ensure that the emergency orders are upheld and that academic activities can proceed without interference. The involvement of political affiliations in student disputes underscores the broader challenges faced by educational institutions in managing such conflicts.
