Surat's First Government College to Finally Get Permanent Campus After Four-Year Wait

In a significant development for higher education in Surat, the city's first Government Arts, Commerce and Science College (GACS) located in Limbayat is finally poised to receive its own dedicated permanent campus. This move comes nearly four years after the institution began its academic operations, marking the end of a prolonged period of makeshift arrangements.

From Municipal School to Dedicated Campus

Since its inception, the college has been functioning from a municipal school building, a temporary solution that has now reached its conclusion. The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has officially identified a substantial plot of land measuring 31,415 square meters in the Dindoli area specifically for the development of the college's permanent campus.

This land, which was previously reserved for a civic project, is now proposed to be transferred to the state government to facilitate the establishment of the college. This strategic reallocation underscores the priority being given to educational infrastructure in the region.

Land Swap Agreement with Comparable Value

In exchange for the Dindoli land, the Surat Municipal Corporation has requested three government-owned plots with a combined area of 27,208 square meters. These plots are located in Sultanabad Bhimpor (18,867 sq m), Bhatha (7,273 sq m), and Bamroli (1,068 sq m).

Officials have clarified that while the total area of the plots being sought in return is smaller, their collective market value is comparable to the land being provided by SMC. "Area-wise, the plots are smaller than the land being given, but the value is almost the same," stated an official involved in the negotiations.

According to detailed valuations, the Dindoli land is estimated to be worth approximately Rs 74,800 per square meter. In contrast, the government plots range between Rs 75,500 and Rs 1.14 lakh per square meter, justifying the equivalence in overall value despite the difference in physical size.

Addressing Long-Pending Educational Demands

The establishment of a full-fledged campus for the Limbayat college has been a persistent and long-standing demand from both students and local residents. This issue has been raised repeatedly through various representations and petitions over the years, highlighting the community's strong desire for improved educational facilities.

In 2022, alongside GACS Limbayat, the government also inaugurated a Government Science College (GSC) in Varachha. Prior to the launch of these two institutions, Surat notably lacked any government-run arts, commerce, or science colleges, creating a significant gap in affordable higher education options.

Although grant-in-aid colleges have operated in the city for many years, there has been a gradual shift as many grant-in-aid courses are being replaced by self-financed programs. This transition has intensified the demand for more accessible and affordable government-run higher education institutions, making the development of these campuses even more critical.

Progress on Parallel Educational Projects

In a related development, land for the Government Science College in Varachha was allocated near Laskana several months ago, and construction work has already commenced. Similar to GACS Limbayat, the Varachha college is currently operating from a municipal school, awaiting the completion of its own dedicated facility.

The simultaneous progress on both campuses represents a concerted effort by authorities to bolster Surat's public higher education infrastructure, providing students with enhanced learning environments and greater opportunities for academic advancement.
