Delhi University Proposes Alumni and Corporate Funding for Semester-Abroad Initiative
New Delhi: Delhi University has unveiled plans to leverage its extensive alumni network and secure corporate funding to provide crucial financial support for students from economically weaker sections who participate in its proposed semester-away programme (SAP) at foreign higher education institutions (FHEIs). Official university documents detail this strategic approach to ensuring equitable access to international academic opportunities.
Financial Assistance Framework for Meritorious Students
The university has formally proposed establishing a financial assistance mechanism specifically for meritorious students opting for the SAP. This support is earmarked for students belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC), Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), and persons with benchmark disabilities. According to the official document, funding will be sourced from a combination of internal university reserves and external sponsorship mobilized through alumni contributions and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. The university will establish clear, transparent criteria for selecting beneficiaries from the pool of applicants to ensure fairness and merit-based allocation.
Streamlining Fundraising Through the DU Foundation
To efficiently manage and channel these contributions, Delhi University is likely to utilize the University of Delhi Foundation as its primary fundraising conduit. This dedicated arm of the university is responsible for building and managing the institution's endowment fund by systematically mobilizing donations from alumni, philanthropists, industry leaders, and corporate partners. This structured approach aims to create a sustainable financial pool for the initiative.
Tapping a Vast Alumni Network for Sustained Support
Delhi University boasts an exceptionally large, though historically less organized, alumni base. Estimates suggest this network includes over 90 lakh (9 million) graduates, many of whom are prominent figures in various fields of public life. The university now views this vast community as a potent and reliable source for sustained financial backing for the semester-away programme. By formally engaging alumni, DU aims to transform this latent potential into active, ongoing support for student mobility.
Program Administration and Academic Integrity
The university's foreign registry division has been designated as the nodal office for initiating and managing the SAP. Its responsibilities will include facilitating partnerships with foreign institutions, coordinating student mobility logistics, and assisting selected candidates with accommodation and other essential arrangements. A specially constituted committee, led by the chairperson of international relations, will oversee the student selection process, with a strong emphasis on maintaining diversity among the participants.
Academic protocols for the programme ensure that the degree will continue to be awarded solely by Delhi University. Credits earned at the partner foreign institution will be clearly reflected on the student's official marksheet or transcript. In instances where a student does not qualify for a specific course at the host foreign institution, they will be required to earn an equivalent number of credits through alternative courses recommended by the university's own academic expert committee, safeguarding academic standards.
Aligning with National Education Policy and Eligibility
The semester-away programme is a key component of Delhi University's broader internationalisation strategy, which aligns with the University Grants Commission (UGC) 2022 regulations. The SAP will allow enrolled students to spend one semester at a partnered foreign institution while earning fully transferable academic credits. Eligibility for the programme extends to undergraduate students admitted from the 2022–23 academic session onward. Participation will be permitted in select semesters, contingent upon successful course mapping and the finalization of institutional agreements between DU and the foreign partners.
The formal proposal for this initiative is scheduled to be presented for approval before the university's academic council at its forthcoming meeting on April 15.
