The theatre world is in mourning following the tragic and untimely death of Imani Smith, a talented performer best remembered for her role as Young Nala in Disney's Broadway production of The Lion King. The 26-year-old actor died after an alleged homicide in Edison, New Jersey, on December 21.
Details of the Tragic Incident
According to reports from the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, police in Edison responded to a distressing 911 call. Upon arrival, they discovered Smith suffering from multiple stab wounds. She was rushed immediately to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital but was pronounced dead there.
Authorities moved swiftly and have arrested Jordan D. Jackson-Small, 35, in connection with her death. The prosecutor's office clarified that Smith and Jackson-Small knew each other prior to the incident, indicating this was not a random act of violence. Smith's aunt, Kira Helper, identified Jackson-Small as the actor's boyfriend in a post on a fundraising platform.
Charges and Family's Heartbreaking Tribute
Jackson-Small was taken into custody without incident and now faces serious charges. These include first-degree murder, second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon. He is currently being held at the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Centre.
In a moving tribute on a GoFundMe page created to support Smith's grieving family, her aunt remembered her as a beacon of light and talent. "Imani had her whole life ahead of her. She was a vivacious, loving and fiercely talented person. A true triple-threat performer," she wrote. The tribute highlighted that Smith's time on Broadway as Young Nala perfectly reflected "the joy, creativity, and light she put into the world."
The fundraising initiative has set a target of USD 55,000 to assist Smith's parents, Monique Rance-Helper and Rawni Helper, and her young son during this devastating period. Imani Smith is survived by her three-year-old son, her parents, an aunt, and two younger siblings.
