An engineer with the Bengaluru Central City Corporation has been suspended following an investigation that revealed substandard asphalting work on city roads. The suspension order, issued by the Bengaluru Central City Corporation Commissioner, cited that the proportion of asphalt and the thickness of the layer were less than the prescribed specifications, resulting in poor-quality asphalting.
Investigation Findings
The inquiry found that the asphalting work did not meet the required standards, compromising the durability and safety of the roads. The commissioner's order noted that the engineer was responsible for overseeing the project and failed to ensure compliance with technical specifications.
The substandard work was detected during a routine quality check, which revealed that the asphalt mix ratio and layer thickness were below the minimum requirements. This led to immediate action against the engineer, who has been suspended pending further disciplinary proceedings.
Impact on Road Quality
Poor asphalting can lead to premature road deterioration, potholes, and safety hazards for commuters. The affected roads are likely to require rework, incurring additional costs for the corporation. A senior BBMP official stated, "We have a zero-tolerance policy for substandard work. The engineer's suspension sends a clear message that quality standards must be upheld."
The corporation has initiated a broader review of ongoing road projects to ensure compliance with specifications. Officials have warned that similar actions will be taken against any contractor or engineer found violating quality norms.
