India's Tree Diversity Goes Digital
A new online portal, India Trees and Vegetation Types, is now cataloguing the country's vast tree diversity, featuring over 4,000 tree species and nearly 150 palm species. The database was conceptualised by Professor K Sankara Rao, a prominent botanist, to document and preserve information about India's rich flora across varied ecosystems.
Comprehensive Coverage of Ecosystems
The portal covers trees from tropical rainforests to alpine regions, including rare and endemic species. It provides detailed descriptions, photographs, and distribution maps for each species. The palm species catalogued include both native and introduced varieties found in different parts of India.
Research and Conservation Impact
According to Professor Rao, the database aims to serve as a valuable resource for researchers, conservationists, and policymakers. It highlights the ecological importance of tree species and supports efforts in biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation. The portal is accessible to the public, encouraging citizen science and awareness.
Future Updates and Expansion
The team plans to regularly update the database with new species and additional data on tree uses, phenology, and threats. The initiative is expected to aid in identifying priority areas for conservation and reforestation projects across India.
