In a heartfelt and revealing interview, veteran actress and politician Hema Malini has shared her profound grief and reflections following the passing of her husband, the legendary actor Dharmendra, nearly six weeks ago. Speaking to senior journalist Subhash K Jha for The Indian Express, Malini offered an intimate look into their enduring relationship, his final days, and addressed persistent rumours about her equation with his first family.
Navigating Grief and Cherished Memories
Hema Malini confessed to being deeply sorrowful, a state she is still grappling with. "I was very deeply in sorrow, still that is there. But trying to get out of it, because it is too much for me to take," she stated. Acknowledging her perceived strength, she emphasized the necessity to move forward, saying, "I have to go on, I have to."
She reflected on their remarkable 57-year bond, a connection where busy schedules never overshadowed their priority for each other. Malini fondly recalled Dharmendra's habitual phone calls during her trips and how he would drive down from their farm in Lonavala just to be with her and their daughters, Esha and Ahana Deol.
Dharmendra's Final Days and a Life Well-Lived
Opening up about the veteran actor's last days, Hema Malini revealed that he had returned home from the hospital and she felt assured of his health. "Till that time, I am sure he was alright. I felt he would be around for one or two more years, definitely," she shared. She expressed the family's hope, based on past recoveries, that he would return "healthy and smiling" once again.
Remembering him with immense love and pride, she said, "He had the best of life. Whatever he desired, he had it. Such a sweet person he was. And I feel proud that so many people love him."
Addressing Rumours and Clarifying Family Bonds
Hema Malini directly tackled the speculation of a rift with Dharmendra's first wife, Prakash Kaur, and his sons, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol, which was fuelled by separate prayer meetings held after the actor's demise.
She firmly stated that her relationship with Sunny and Bobby has "always been very nice and cordial. Even today it is very nice." Attributing the gossip to public appetite for sensationalism, she questioned the need to offer explanations for her personal life. "We are absolutely happy and very close to each other. That’s it," she affirmed.
Expressing sadness that people use others' grief for articles, she highlighted the family's unity in future plans, noting, "Sunny is planning a museum for Dharamji. So he will do it. We will consult and do it. He will tell me whatever he does, he tells me."
When asked about her healing process, Malini's words echoed the depth of her loss. "We were together for 57 years. I can’t imagine a life without him; I miss him every minute," she said, poignantly adding, "When will I meet him again?"
Dharmendra was last seen in the film 'Ikkis' alongside Agastya Nanda, Jaideep Ahlawat, and the late actor Asrani.
