This year, Bollywood seems to be taking over the Met Gala. Famed director and filmmaker Karan Johar officially made his debut on the white carpet stairs at the 2026 Met Gala, an event that celebrates fashion in all its glory.
Karan Johar's Met Gala 2026 Look
Inspired heavily by one of the most renowned artists of all time, Johar's ensemble perfectly complemented the night's theme, 'Costume Art.' The outfit was created by famous designer Manish Malhotra and directly inspired by the timeless paintings of artist Raja Ravi Varma. Johar stunned the crowd in a beautiful hand-painted cape, paired with matching sunglasses and sleek black pants, looking nothing short of royalty.
According to Vogue, the artisans behind the magnificent piece took approximately 5,600 hours to complete the look. The cape features intricate details, including zardozi borders, three-dimensional pillars, lotuses, swans, and a hand-painted jacket lining. Since the entire outfit is hand-painted, it took 86 days to make. The paintings were executed with acrylic and oil finishes and varnished to ensure they resemble real artwork seen in museums.
Speaking to the outlet, Johar expressed his commitment to authenticity, stating, 'I was very clear from the beginning that nothing could be simulated or cut short. No print, no digital intervention, no approximation.'
Karan Johar's Inspiration
Taking to social media, Johar shared what made him choose the piece for the glamorous night. He wrote, 'Raja Ravi Varma felt right because his work does something I've always tried to do in cinema. He painted feelings.' Furthermore, he wanted to bring Indian culture to the forefront of the global stage. He added, 'To bring our Indian culture to the global stage with the vision of couture and gratitude woven together is an art form in itself, which he has mastered. You made me feel like a canvas for your art, thank you!' His post garnered attention in no time.
Johar's debut at the Met Gala marks a significant moment for Bollywood on the international fashion scene. The event, known for its extravagant and thematic dress codes, saw Johar embrace his heritage while making a bold fashion statement.
Manish Malhotra, the designer behind the look, is celebrated for his work in Bollywood and his ability to blend traditional Indian craftsmanship with contemporary design. The collaboration between Johar and Malhotra for the Met Gala highlights the growing influence of Indian fashion on global platforms.
The Met Gala 2026, themed 'Costume Art,' encouraged attendees to draw inspiration from art history, and Johar's choice of Raja Ravi Varma, a pioneering Indian painter, was a fitting tribute to the theme. Raja Ravi Varma is known for his depictions of scenes from Indian mythology and everyday life, and his work has had a lasting impact on Indian art.
In addition to Johar's appearance, other Bollywood celebrities are expected to make their mark at the Met Gala in the coming years, further solidifying the industry's presence on the international stage. Johar's debut is seen as a milestone, paving the way for more Indian representation at the prestigious event.
