A grand tribute event was recently held in Kerala to honor the legendary singer S. P. Balasubrahmanyam, celebrating his immense contributions to Indian music. The highlight of the ceremony was the unveiling of a magnificent 10-foot statue of the late singer on March 31 at the V. T. Bhattathiripad Cultural Complex in Palakkad.
Statue Inauguration by M. M. Keeravani and Family Presence
The statue was inaugurated by Oscar-winning music composer M. M. Keeravani, who represented the Malayalam playback singers’ association ‘Samam’. The event was attended by several prominent singers and members of SPB’s family, including his son S. P. Charan. Renowned vocalists such as Hariharan and K. S. Chithra also participated, adding to the significance of the occasion.
Grand Musical Tribute “Sangeetha Megham”
Following the statue unveiling, a grand musical tribute titled “Sangeetha Megham” was held at a nearby ground. This spectacular event featured more than 50 singers performing songs in memory of SPB, making it one of the largest musical tributes ever organized in Kerala for the iconic artist. The performances showcased the deep admiration and respect the music community holds for his legacy.
Rajinikanth’s Heartfelt Video Message
Superstar Rajinikanth and actor Kamal Haasan were invited to attend the tribute event but could not be present in person due to their busy schedules. Instead, they shared emotive video clips commemorating SP Balasubrahmanyam and his contributions to music. In his video message, Rajinikanth spoke warmly about the singer’s talent and kind nature.
According to reports, Rajinikanth stated, “There is no one in India who does not know S. P. Balasubrahmanyam. With his voice and talent, he brought happiness to millions of people.” He also recounted a personal memory from a flight journey, highlighting SPB’s humility and dedication.
Rajinikanth Recalls SPB’s In-Flight Performance
Rajinikanth further explained how passengers on a flight recognized SPB and requested him to sing. At that time, songs from the film Sankarabharanam were extremely popular. “People in the flight asked him to sing the Sankarabharanam song. After he sang it once, everyone kept asking for ‘once more’,” Rajinikanth said.
He described how SPB happily sang for nearly one and a half hours until the flight reached Chennai, never showing any signs of tiredness. “He never showed any tiredness and kept singing to make everyone happy. That shows what a wonderful human being he was,” Rajinikanth added. He praised the statue in Palakkad as a beautiful way to ensure the legendary singer is never forgotten.
Kamal Haasan’s Emotional Bond with SPB
Actor Kamal Haasan also shared an emotional video message during the event. He thanked the organizers and the people of Palakkad for honoring SP Balasubrahmanyam in such a grand manner. “Only great human beings can become great artists. This tribute proves how much people love him,” Kamal Haasan said.
He spoke about the personal bond he shared with the singer, revealing, “Everyone knows how emotional I am about SPB. I always called him ‘Annaya’, and he would lovingly call me ‘Thammudu’.” Kamal emphasized that such gestures demonstrate the deep affection people still hold for the legendary singer and his unforgettable music.
